NCAA rule changes - Bruce Wang - 01-25-2013

What are your thoughts as to whether this works to Stanford's advantage or not?  Seems like it would, as Stanford has a specific and limited pool to recruit from.  And the ones Stanford gets seem to stick to their commitments because, well, it's STANFORD.  The other schools will have to spend relatively more time, energy, and bribery money to recruit and defend their commits.

I don't like it. The kids are going to be bombarded by calls, text, game requests, Facebook messages and everything else all the time! I think it's better to lump all in one category, but still have dead periods during which no contact electronic or otherwise is permitted.

That's my take too. I don't know if it'll benefit Stanford relative to everyone else, but I do remember reading that Shaw wasn't a fan of the change:
Quote:"I think we need to have some conversations about how we would operate in that world," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "As coaches, I think we're happy where we're at. These kids were texting during class. They need to go to school. That is what's important. The underclassmen, they can't do anything for us immediately. So many of them are going to change their minds four or five times on where they're going to school, so do we need to potentially barrage them? I don't know if it helps our sport."

Why does the NCAA try to restrict the money paid to athletes, but now is willing to say there are no restrictions on messaging?

And BTW, why should the NCAA be regulating any of this stuff anyway?  Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! wrote a column this week about how the NCAA is trying to stop the flow of money in a market-driven economy, to preserve the notion of amateurism.  He pointed out, I think correctly, that the Olympics used to only feature amateurs and did fine after allowing professionals.

What would be so bad with schools paying recruits to come to their school anyway? It's not like the rich schools aren't already getting the best players.
