WBB: Stanford 74 Oregon 50 -
81alum - 02-24-2013
Chiney set a Stanford record for rebounds in a single game today (24), and also broke the Stanford record for double-doubles with 52 for her career. An unstoppable Chiney, a very good Amber, and a decent defense were all that were needed to beat Oregon on this emotional senior day.
Stanford got off to a much faster start than usual and it did not much involve Chiney at first. Amber kept swishing mid range jumpers, and Sara and Bonnie each made their first three point attempts. Before anyone blinked, it was Stanford 16 Oregon 6 and Westhead called a time out.
Oregon tried to stop Chiney...really, they did. Their zone seemed designed to deny her the entry pass and they did succeed for a time in making other players do the scoring. But the longer the game wore on the more openings to Chiney we found, until she racked up 27 points on 9/15 shooting. Making 9/10 free throws and getting both Oregon bigs into foul trouble (with 4 each) certainly helped. Chiney had a double double at halftime, and Tara took her out just after she broke Nneka's rebounding record. Chiney has had a habit of diving for loose balls and doing contortionist moves that make me cringe with fear of injury at this stage of the season. The deal is--they usually work. Not all of her shots were easy ones at all--quite a few that went in were difficult bank shots, hooks, etc.Â
Amber was not merely hitting jumpers, she was swooshing them through nothing but net. She was 6/10 with 4 assists.Â
Sara, Taylor, and Bonnie each hit early threes which began to make us look unstoppable. I know Westhead throught so--he called a lot of timeouts to try to cool off our shooting. It worked. As the game wore on our three point shooting declined, and we wound up at 6/28 for 21%. It is a good thing that Chiney took over because we obviously were unable to sustain our early three point success. In fairness, though, some of the missed three pointers wound up becoming offensive rebounds and putbacks by Chiney, so maybe they should be thought of as assists instead of misses!
The two seniors had so-so games. Senior day must be very emotional for them--it was emotional for this fan just watching them. I understand that Tinkle had both parents watching her play at Stanford for the first time. I got choked up watching them all come onto the court after the game. Joslyn had one of the most satisfying blocks during this game--it made a brobdingnagian smacking sound that was heard all over Maples and brought loud cheers from the crowd. Ruef defended well and had 9 rebounds, but shot poorly and went back into her free throw slump. Still, the crowd surrounded her with affection when the game was done, even though we hope to see her again.
Jasmine Camp looked a little better this game than last. She hit a nice trey and had 5 points in 9 minutes. Tess continues to look a bit awkward on offense, but she had 2 blocks in 4 minutes. Taylor and Bonnie got lots of minutes, Tara clearly trusts Bonnie more on defense than she once did, and Taylor's fine three point shooting last game must have earned her some more minutes. Bonnie had an excellent layup and Taylor hit a nice 8 foot floater today, showing that they can do more than shoot threes. But their overall scoring was 2/8 and 3/10, respectively. Taylor is beginning to look streakier from three than Bonnie.
Tara remarked that we did not play particularly well--except for Chiney and Amber, and I would have to agree. This was not the balanced offensive juggernaut we saw on Friday. We shot 37% from the field, and made 70% of our free throws. Turnovers (12) and assists (15) were around average. The game was won with defense, with a 45-34 rebounding advantage, with 9 blocked shots, and with the Chiney machine.

Nice summary. I'll add that we saw some great passing today, particularly from Taylor and Ruef.

In other news yesterday, Oregon State led C.al by 17 in the first half by going crazy from three point range, but narrowly lost in the end. I was able to watch the first half before leaving to go to Maples, and was amazed that it was the same OSU team we had just crushed. Their frosh guard Weisner was incredible--we will have a lot to handle from that team in future years.
I was somewhat sorry that OSU did not pull it off and leave us in sole possession of first place, but it is probably better for the Pac12 this way, with (hopefully) Stanford and Cal closing out and meeting in the Pac12 tournament finals. That game, if it happens, is shaping up to be bigger than the first few rounds of the NCAA--at least the equivalent of an Elite 8 matchup.

I just wanted to stress that Chiney not only set the single game rebounding record yesterday, but became the sixth player to notch 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, AND she just passed Nneka to become the career leader in double-doubles. Is she really still a junior?
At one point, watching her rebound, score, block shots, make steals and sometimes bring the ball up, I blurted out, "Is there anything she can't do?" I know that the player of the year award was decided before the season started, but how do you not have to at least think about it now?Â

The game had our high in FGA (75 vs 72(also against Oregon), avg 59), 3pt attempts (28 vs 27 (vs Oregon), avg 15), and offensive rebounds (23 vs 20, 13 avg). 37% of our FGA were 3pt attempts, just shy of our 39% high. We got 48% of the Off. Rebound possibilities, which is very good, but only 62% of defensive rebound chances. Last time we faced Oregon, they got the season high 12 points off fast breaks against us; this time they got 0. (On the other hand, last time we got 24 fast break points, but only 4 this time.)
Chiney & Alleyne came into the game tied in total rebounds, leading the PAC-12. Perhaps that's why Chiney finished the game 14 rebounds ahead.
The officiating stunk. Once Stanford got way ahead, the officials seemed to want to call everything that wasn't blatant to Oregon's favor. But Stanford quit beating Oregon once we got to a 20 point lead and just managed to stay about that far ahead. (We were up 20 just 11:43 into the game and up 19 twenty minutes later. We didn't get to 25 points up until there was less than 5 minutes left.) For instance, Carpenter got her 4th foul with nearly 14 1/2 minutes to go, and Brenner got her 4th foul with just under 11 minutes left. Both finished the game.
As a result of playing Oregon evenly after the first 12 minutes, we didn't get as much time for our subs. That hurt our development for games later in this season, and for next year. We can't blame that all on the officials, although it seemed they contributed.
Can anyone figure out why Amber & Jasmine were put to rebound on Stanford free throws while the much taller Bonnie, Sara, & Taylor(maybe it was Mikaela) were sent to the defensive end to guard players??? This HAD to be done at Tara's command, but I don't fathom a reason for it. The only thing I can imagine is that Amber can only play backcourt defense (steal the ball) but it seems all her opponents can take her off the dribble in the forecourt. Well, we did do better against fast breaks this way.

I didn't notice that Bonnie apparently had a good defensive game. That is, Oregon didn't score very fast while she was in (34pt/game rate), compared to when she was out (78pt/game). She did get a boost in the scoring rate (but not differential) by being in during "garbage time" (the two teams tied 4-4 over the last 4 minutes (ie, 40pt/game rate) after the first stringers went out).
I still think Tara doesn't play Sara enough, but maybe she thinks the other players need more time. Despite Sara's poor FG%, the team scored fastest while she was in the game. Part of that surely is due to Chiney's put backs. Whatever it was, it turned out to be effective (90pt/game). Also, when Sara was out, the game slowed down to less than half as fast (in: 90+56 = 146 pts; out: 47+18 = 65 pts)
Sigh.. The PAC-12.... I don't blame them for giving player-of-the-week to Arizona's Davellyn Whyte with a triple double in overtime (31 pts, 16 reb, 10 assts). Whyte averaged 24.5 points, 14.0 rebounds and 8.5 assists, 1.0 blocks, 6.0 turnovers, while shooting 47.2 percent from the floor in 90 minutes. (Chiney averaged 23 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists, 2.5 blocks, 4 turnovers, 54.2% in 80 minutes. Oh yea, Whyte's team was 0-2 while Chiney's was 2-0.)  But why did they choose a ho-hum shot from Chiney for the nominated play of the week, when she had that circus shot this week.
Chiney is now #5 in NCAA rebounds behind players at power schools Robert Morris, Utah Valley, High Point, and Bryant. She's #3 in scoring and #2 in double doubles (1 behind the leader) and #4 in FG%. Truth is, I don't care too much for individual stats. Team stats matter more, and Stanford isn't as good this year as usual.

I noticed that too, and I assumed it was to help with transition defense.
