If California's serious about holding onto jobs, they should look into reducing real estate and housing costs via deregulation.

Stanford fans (those from all states) should thank the Lone Star State profusely for the import of Andrew Luck, Stepfan Taylor, Michael Thomas, Sam Schwartzstein, Barry Browning, Cameron Fleming, Josh Mauro, Jordan Williamson and everyone named Ogumwike.Â
I am surprised that Gov Perry was not touring Orange County high schools looking for a QB for the Longhorns.

An A&M guy's going to scout for the Longhorns? Perry has three responses to you:
1) Johnny Manziel
2) LOL NO WAI.
3) Well, I kind of forget...it was uh, right on the tip of my tongue...give me a second here...

To misapply what Chiang Kai-Shek said about fighting Mao's communist bandits instead of the Japanese: Texas is a disease of the skin. Southern California is a cancer of the soul.

I picked up a little bit of California pride while at Stanford, but given that the state's flagship public university was a hated rival, the word California never really sunk into part of my identity. And believe me, there was oftentimes a momentary microsecond-long "oh really" moment if I mentioned being from Texas during any introductions while at Stanford, which always reminded me that I shouldn't expect warm welcomes. Thankfully, being part of the Stanford family has never required an oath of fealty to California.
California is a little slice of paradise in a state, so if it's having trouble keeping residents or balancing its budget, then something's gone terribly wrong.

You wouldn't say that if you had taken my advice at Rose Bowl time and visited here.

So I lived in LA for a few years. Made some terrific friends. The following was my impression of the rest of the place: it's an industry town. And the people in that industry generally can only have an informed discussion on two topics: movies and weight loss fads.
The LA DMA does have some pretty frickin' awesome ethnic food.

I have lived in Texas, the L.A. region, and the Bay Area. I respectfully decline to throw flammable material into this fire.... All I'll say is the Bay Area has nicer weather. (The opinions stated here are my own and represent no one else. YMMV. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, FFA, or any other F.A.)
As a matter of fact, the article's assertion "...2000 and 2002 was the earliest episode in this conflict" is of course untrue (and made me wonder why the author had such a limited view or limited knowledge). My opinion is that if a state government isn't trying to entice companies and their jobs for their constituents, it isn't doing a part of its job.

I'm sure the FA prefers California weather.

I realize that it's no loyalty oath, but me and my wife are headed to West Marin in April. Now that the kids are out of the house, we have to make the determination as to whether we are going to go all in the family and move down to central Texas or just abandon all of them completely and try to find a hovel somewhere off of Sir Francis Drake Road. I'm going to try to get my buddy in San Rafael to give us the hardest sell he can, but I still don't think the $$$ will make sense.Â
Ultimately, I think I am the kind of person who will simply sit back and let family ties bind. But that blue Pacific and the laughably simple, low key Pt. Reyes-ish life that I pretend I could live is pretty appealing. West Marin has always really been the only spot in CA -- and that actually includes Stanford -- where I have felt at ease and comfortable. Odd because it is not a particularly "warm" group of people that live out that way.
I've always thought the CA TX comparison was pretty easy. It's easier to make a living in TX and it is arguably easier to live in Texas , but there are far more places in CA where you can be outside all of the time.Â
And hence it always has seemed to me that it is easier to be alive in CA. I think that holds true for much of the West.

Which is, coincidentally, where I got married.
On one hand you have Rick Perry running around spouting his conservative, get-government-out-of-our-lives boilerplate slogans. On the other hand he is a shill for a monstrous corporate welfare policy of freebies and incentives. I have no problem with the idea that responsible adults can agree to pay more taxes so that relocating companies can pay none. If that's what they want, fine. I do have a problem with Perry and the whole free Republic of Texas thing. As a guy who has worked in Houston I can truly say, " It IS the heat
and the hypocrisy."

Did you find this wasteland at say, Caltech? (http://www.caltech.edu/) JPL? (http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/) Or maybe at the L.A. Phil? (http://www.laphil.com/) I would also mention the Huntington again, but then a day there is probably wasted on somebody who can't tell the difference between Gainsborough's art and a u$c d-bag. Or maybe when it comes to condescending generalizations you're just full of $%&@, Publius.
