Dwight Powell decided, with 2.4 seconds left, that he'd rather try to drive for a dunk than take an open jump shot. He chose...poooorrlly. (time expired.)

Not quite as good as the "foul a half-court shooter with time expiring to lose the game," but a worthy entry to the Johnny Dawkins canon.

The write ups seem to imply that even going for a lay up, instead of the dunk, would have likely gotten the hoop. Still, we probably would have lost the overtime session, so I'm not sweating a missed opportunity to tie the game.

Uh oh.  Where's Garvin?  The MBB team has sunk to a new low if they've lost Garvin's interest as well.

On one side, I can't help but think that maybe a full passionate crowd would have made the difference here.  As it stands now, Maples offers a rather minimal home court advantage.  So maybe with a bit more crowd belief this game could have been a shiny W critical to getting that NIT invite.

However on the other side, there is ample evidence to support a theory that JD is not a great coach.  The season to season, game to game and half to half progressions all point to the idea that JD is getting outcoached on a routine basis in a conference that most believe is not exactly loaded with the most talented coaches in the NCAA.

Farm93 - I bet that a full house crowd on its feet, screaming out their lungs would have changed the outcome. You gotta think a strong homecourt advantage is worth 2-3 points minimum. I think it helped in the NIT run, that the crowds improved (though never selling out) as the tournament progressed. But that's not the situation in play. And it's partly JD's fault.

I must be a bad luck charm ..... I was given tix to the game late when an ex-roommate realized he couldn't make it and joined shortly after the second half began.  It turned out to be the turnaround point where the game went from a decent Stanford lead to a desperate attempt to tie with time running out.  Sigh .....

On the other hand, we were able to exchange  the tix by a .JPG through the ADs website.  Worked like a charm - a good luck one this time.

Unrelated, but lefty your tagline is incredible.

Thanks DaBigV ..... I'm sort of partial myself.  ;D

I like the line too, but the copy editor in me is sneaking to the fore again. Change "appears" to "appeared" to fix the faulty parallelism.

"And Cal won their last Rose Bowl"

and Cal last won a Rose Bowl

-- sounds a little awkward, but it deals with the pronoun agreement problem as well as the problem of the 1938 Rose Bowl not being Cal's last.

Kathy?

Yep

Re: By the by, Stanford MBB lost to Colorado - Leftcoast - 03-01-2013

Appears vs Appeared, last won vs won last.  Got it.

I like the finality of "Won their last" and was implying it wouldn't happen again but I see how it does lend itself to an easy rebuttal.  "No, No, No.  We also played there in 1959!"    We'd be left aghast that a 53 year gap was an acceptable improvement but, as Garvin points out, they ARE 59ers.

Re: By the by, Stanford MBB lost to Colorado - yvonne - 03-01-2013

Cal is singular
the 59ers are (oh too) plural
