Today's practice -

A few notes on today's practice --
Conor McFadden started with the first team at center. Danser also took reps at first team center, with Garnett playing RG. Wilkes was the second team center today, getting just a few snaps with the first team. Peat took every rep at LT with the first team. Murphy was the second team LT.
There were only two TEs participating in the scrimmage -- Kaumatule and Harrell. Hopkins participated in some drills, but not in the scrimmage. Dudchock was absent.
The receivers with the first team rotated frequently. Those getting first team reps included Montgomery, Cajuste, Young, Trojan, Whitfield, and Rector.
The RBs with the first team were mostly Wilkerson and Wright, with Young occasionally lining up in the backfield. I didn't see Seale today. At FB, Meinken didn't participate.
Lueders was with the first team at OLB. Vaughters was mostly with the second team, though he did have a few first team reps.
Reynolds did not participate. Carrington started at safety with the first team, but Olugbode rotated in and got more first team reps than Carrington.
Lyons started with the first team at CB. Harris got some first team reps. Later, Amanam got some first team reps at CB too. Browning is still out. Pippens was back in action but didn't play much in the scrimmage.
In the scrimmage, the first team defense was very good. They stopped the first team offense on the first 4 or 5 possessions, with several sacks and deflected passes at the line of scrimmage. The first team offense did eventually put some points on the board. Hogan completed a long pass to Young down the left sideline to set up a TD pass to Kaumatule in the left corner of the end zone. Hogan threw an interception, getting picked by Olugbode as he was rolling to the right. Later, Hogan hit Rector down the middle to set up a field goal. Rector got rocked by Richards, but held on (I'm sure Richards was holding back somewhat).
The second team offense did a pretty good job of moving the chains against the second team defense. Crower had a long completion to Crane on the first possession to set up a score. Crower generally was accurate. He connected with Pratt several times. Cummings had some good runs with the second team.
Williamson hit almost every kick. I think I saw him miss just one out of about 10 kicks from 40+ yards. Rhyne clearly was the best punter today. Rhyne also is holding on field goals. The punt returners included Sanders, Montgomery, and Lyons. Sanders did the best job of catching the ball.

From the official write-up: "Quarterback Kevin Hogan, referenced by ESPN Pac-12 analyst Kevin Gemmell as the leagues current Voldemort candidate front runner..."
I believe Gemmell called Hogan the "dark horse" candidate from the conference, which is far from the same thing.

Uhhh..Sanders????

Yeah, I thought the bit about Gemmell was a bit much. I'm sure if you asked KG, he would say Mariota is the #1 option from the Pac12.
The ommission of Sanders was also odd, given public (and media) interest in him. Though I'm in the camp that does not expect Sanders to emerge as a significant force on this team in 2013. There's lots of talent ahead of him who are more familiar with the play book.

Terry said he did the best job catching the ball on punt returns and the Stanford football twitter feed mentioned a 20+ yard run, IIRC.

Read to the end I should.

This is what I could gather, obviously incomplete. But:
Passing
Hogan: 15/21, 1 TD, 1 INT with 165 yards (7.85 YPA) with 71% completed
Crower:10/17 with 87 yards (5.11 YPA) with 59% completed
Rushing
Wright: 6 ATT, 25 YDS (4.2 YPC)
Cummings: 7 ATT, 31 YDS (4.4 YPC)
Young: 1 ATT, 21 YDS
Receiving
Young: 2 REC, 52 YDS (26 YPC)
Montgomery: 3 REC, 36 YDS (12 YPC)
Pratt: 3 REC, 25 YDS (8.3 YPC)
Re: Today's practice -

Hogan numbers seemed very Hogan. I like that. Hope he picks up his YPA this season and I expect he will. 71% completion is excellent and I think what we can about expect from him.
They said Crower played better than his stats indicate, which is very possible. Sounds like he's tall, has accuracy, lacks mobility. If we're going to tailor make our offense to utilize Hogan's running ability, similar to the SF offense, then Crower might not be able to run the offense the same way Hogan does. But 6'5 is a bonus, and QB accuracy is very important. Hopefully Crower can make better high percent throws than Nunes (who loves the deep ball).
Young seems to be our big play guy. He would fit well into the Oregon offense I would assume. I hope we run some read option plays with some combination of Young/Hogan/Barry J.
You don't hear too much about Cummings but he's from my area, Sacramento, just like Jordan Richards. Maybe he is the dark horse in the HB race like Seale. Cummings and Wright both did well with above 4 YPC which is what you aim for with HB's typically. I was curious about Wilkerson's stats, even though we have game stats from him.
Seems like our primary WR's could be Rector, Whitfield, and Montgomery. That's just was I'm getting from the stuff I've read, heard.

THe ESPN write up of the scrimmage was perfunctory, but I found some of the comments be posters who claim to have been at the practice interesting:
http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/54465/weekend-practice-reports
Quote:Hogan looked good.
So did wright, young and montgomery.
Kamatule looked alright and so did Cajuste.
Sanders did not look very good though. He only got a few carries and didn't do much with them, and he had a reception for a few yards and also dropped a easy pass for a first down.
...
I agree about Sanders. Aside from the TD he scored (called back because of a penalty) and a 6-8 yard burst up the middle, he dropped TWO passes and didn't do a whole lot otherwise.Â
