That's a tough region.

Gonzaga gets both a sub-regional and regional as a double-digit seed. AGAIN. Georgia and Iowa State have to be upset. And in this regional, every higher-seed, with the exception of Stanford, has to play on the homecourt of a lower either in the first or second round. I'm not sure Penn State makes it out of LSU, or da Bares make it out of Lubbock (though I think that's more likely than the Nittanys coming out of Baton Rouge).

I just think it would be more sporting to play Duke for the first time rather than Kal for the third time. Of course, assuming the seedings would hold. I suppose I wouldn't be happy, if UCLA was the 3 seed in Spokane either, so maybe the NCAA can't win.Â

Well, our suspicion that C.al would be put in our regional proved to be true.
More surprising to me was that the committee vaulted Tennessee over Penn State, making Tennessee a 2 and Penn State a 3. That freed up Penn State to be sent to our bracket too, in addition to C.al. Since the two of them play each other it makes no difference to us--but Penn State must be furious.
Looking at our first two games, does anyone know anything about Tulsa and Villanova? One commentary indicated that Stanford could have some difficulties preparing for Villanova on "short notice" given that it has a unique system. But I don't have any idea what that meant--what makes Villanova "unique"?
Then potentially Georgia, as Creme projected, in Spokane. Or Iowa State if it can knock off Georgia, or even Gonzaga at home (again?) What kind of a team is Georgia?Â
Finally, I am not convinced we will get matched up with da bears again in the regional final game, given that they have some steep competition to get to us--Texas Tech and Penn State perhaps. I think I rather hope that someone knocks of c.al before we get to them, but I do think we will be better prepared and more ready for them than in our loss.
This is doable. And given that we beat Baylor once before, we can always be optimistic....

Stanford is not getting a lot of respect from the commentators. 3 of the 5 ESPN commentators are predicting Cal to knock off Stanford to get to the final four.
http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/tournament/2013/story/_/id/9066584/women-ncaa-tournament-213-espnw-breaks-bracket
No other commentator predicts any other 1 seed to lose prior to the final four other than one vote for Kentucky to knock of Connecticut.Â
Most agree that the single hardest game on the road to the final four would be Stanford vs. C.al. But Notre Dame has a heck of a bracket, facing Iowa at home inthe 2nd round, and then South Carolina and Duke. I'd rather be us than Notre Dame.
Finally, Charlie Creme has excellent analysis of the inconsistency by which the Committee applies the rules of geography, leading to putting Stanford and kal together. It is worth a read to all angry bracketologists:

What do ESPN ccommentators know about West Coast WBB?? They rarely watch it, and rarely report on it. If you can bear it, watch some of their WBB games and you'll see they only report East Coast results all day long. No reporting the results from the night before, and of course nothing to report during the morning hours.
They don't know us, except for a game or three. What? You say that Baylor isn't perfect this year? When did that happen? Oh......If it wasn't on ESPN, it didn't really happen.
If C.al hadn't lost the game against UCLA, I'd have said they were ripe for the picking. But maybe they've got a renewed energy. They sure squeaked by in, what, 7 games or so. Even with the wake up call, they may get bumped off early again.
Well, I see it is reported that the semis would match (if all holds) Baylor vs Stanford and UConn vs ND. That's disappointing, not because we'd play Baylor, but because Stanford should have to earn a semi-final win to endanger Baylor again. And UConn-ND? Do I hear an echo... That seems so unfair to ND (risking a 4th game) and to UConn (risking going 0-4, and going up against a team that clearly has their number).
Won't it be fun to beat ND though?
You can vote for Chiney in one of those silly little polls.

Every year ESPN has us going down earlier than we do. It's hard to take their women's basketball coverage seriously for that reason. (though I'm a pretty casual fan, to be fair.)

Of course those polls just measure "which player's team has the most fans?" KML is even ahead of Chiney, which is ridiculous.

Actually, I think it is pretty easy compared to us getting Kentucky or Duke. I would not be surprised if Cal was beat by Ttech in Lubbock. Sucks for them being a 2 seed playing in front of 7k fans of a 7 seed team. Also, it sucks we are in the same bracket with Cal. Just like Vball ,the NCAA is too lazy and cheap to send top west teams to other regions.
All in all, we have an easier draw than other 1 seeds sans UConn, who AGAIN has a cakewalk bracket without having to leave CT.

The more I think about it, the idea of K.al playing in Lubbock in front of a sold out crowd of screaming Texas Tech people as a "reward" for earning the 2 seed is....positively delicious. Getting put in the closest regional does not do you a lot of good if you cannot escape from Lubbock.Â
Texas Tech, however, is riding a three game losing streak, with the last two at home to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, so maybe they do not present as big a challenge as we might like to see.

I don't see cal losing to a team, Texas Tech that can't end on a winning note a with a front line 5-10, 5-10 and 6-0.Â
A fine seed except for cal but we are probably the4-5 teams overall so that's fair.Â

Unfortunately, there are very few Round 1/2 sites in the west. Cal couldn't play at Stanford or Colorado and if they played at Gonzaga they'd be in the Spokane Region anyway. So they had to travel to Lubbock for their Round 1/2 and then the committee doesn't want them to have two cross country trips - so they have to stay in the West Region.
From Cal's perspective, they probably prefer to be in our Region - rather than Baylor, ND, or UConn. They play a team that they know really well, that they have beaten, and is considered the weakest of the four #1 seeds.

I think Fresno St could knock off Cal in first round. Remember the Bulldogs played us very close early in the year. I think Fresno St matches up with Cal better than TTech.

It should be noted that this season, the Cardinal is 13-2 against teams making the field. That's third-best.

Most of the times the team we lose to ends up being the National Champion.

It has been too long for me to remember--the two times we did win the National Championship--were we the favorite to win? I seem to think at least one of those two years we were a surprise.Â
I'm ready for another surprise.

It was a while ago, but from what I can remember about 1990, every Stanford opponent after the first game had won their previous game as an upset. I think Tennessee was the the number 1 seed, but they lost to Auburn in the semifinals.

In 1992, Virginia was the No. 1 seed. We played them in the opening game, and the final was anti-climactic.
