Tree-Fence(ing) NCAA champion - TreeWeird - 03-23-2013

All I know about fencing is "the pointy end goes in the other fellow", but any Stanford NCAA champion deserves a link:

Congrats to Alexander!

Come on out to the ranchito. I'll show you everything you might want to know about fencing...and then some.

Re: Tree-Fence(ing) NCAA champion - 81alum - 03-23-2013

My daughter took up fencing a year ago, and I'm learning to appreciate it as a fabulous sport.  It is initially hard for spectators because it is so fast.

I am so proud that Stanford competes and succeeds in the Olympic sports and not just the TV sports.

Does that kind of fencing involve posts or points?

Anybody know if the Old Pavilion still exists?

Yes it does. It's now called Burnham Pavilion, home of a number of PE classes and offices for some coaches. The men's volleyball team plays about half its matches in Burnham.

Much as I hate those AT&T U-verse commercials where the 12-year-old tells a bunch of 8-year-olds how much tougher he/she had it back in the day -- that's exactly how I feel when I contemplate being able to register on line instead of standing IN line at Mem Aud or Old Pavilion...

Anyone else remember enrolling at Maples with a tarp on the floor, long lines in front of tables for each department and the floor undulating like the top of a Jiffy Pop tray with the heat on high?

Vaguely. I started grad school in '81 and that was the drill then.

And I can't imagine not being able to enroll online. Unlike those commercials, I understand how annoying that must have been and can fully admit that I had it much better.
