Re: Another national championship - yvonne - 03-24-2013

We have yet to win an NCAA championship this year, and are third in the Director's Cup standings.

The Director's Cup will be fine.  Lots of second through ninth place finishes are likely.  However, the NCAA opportunities are really limited.
Women's Basketball, Women's Golf and Women's Water Polo are the best bets.

Regarding the Director's Cup, I hope you're right, but I'm not quite so optimistic.  This is the first time in at least eight years that we have not been [more or less comfortably] in front at this stage [i.e., the first Winter standings].  And Oregon, the team in front, has some point scoring opportunities as well from here on out.

Sure hope we aren't in the process of making room for the 2013 Rose Bowl Trophy by creating an empty 2013 spot on the Director's Cup shelf...

Haven't looked at the Director's Cup standings, but I'll absolutely guarantee you that Oregon will not be a factor. Don't worry about the Ducks/

Hope you're right.  I guess my concern is based on the facts that, as things stand right now, Oregon's baseball, softball, men's basketball, men's tennis, and women's track & field squads are ranked higher than ours, and, last year, we only outpointed them in the Spring sports by 63 points, which is less than our current deficit.  Of course, I think we cover a couple of sports they don't [or, at least, don't with any realistic chance of winning] -- see, e.g., women's basketball and water polo -- so I'm sure we stand to pick some points they can't match in those.  Nevertheless, it appears from current point totals that Oregon has really picked up its game this season.

Oregon's men's T&F finished tied for 6th @ indoor nationals and should be close to that @ outdoor nationals - which are in Eugene this year.

Not sure if it was a coaching decision to not go all in, but LSJU women scored 0 pts @ indoor T&F championships thereby not finishing in the top 50, while the men tied for 30th. Oregon was 1st for women.

Kentucky, with much of our former T&F coaching staff was also a non factor, but improved significanlty over their previous years.

Ducks will be strong in softball and baseball, competitive in both M&W golf, but otherwise pretty light in in spring sports (aside from T&F).  We should net out ahead of them in combined hoops scoring and we still have M&W swimming for winter championships where UO does not have teams. Should see a nice bump there.

Only one T&F will count, so NACDA will choose the higher finishes.

That part of the scoring system keeps changing, but I thought they went back to scoring both.  The rationale, I believe, was that Stanford often hits the 20 sport max anyway, so counting both increases the chances that Florida, Texas, UCLA or Oregon might actually make it close.

My quick look at the scoring structure did not include that older higher finish language, so I think both can be added to the tally again this year.  That will be very helpful for several NACDA Director's Cup top 10 programs.
