The Pay Wall will make her even more out of it - Redrum - 03-30-2013

Had my first experience with the Chron's new pay wall.  Now, you can get in through the back door with some papers by googling your desired article and following the link.  Didn't work this time w/ the Chron.  But it got me thinking.  If you're a marginal, regional writer covering a niche sport (compared to men's bball and football),  how smart a move is it to become even more inaccessible?

So, who's going to support Killion?  The fabulously tightwad Bare supporters?  And if you were going to wrestle on the floor with dogs (puppies or adults)  which dogs would you choose to get goofy with?  Tara's Labs or that Georgia coach's border collies?  We had border collies in our family for a while.  Like furry school crossing guards or earnest Eagle Scouts....but with some endearing characteristics.  Labs?  That's why humans keep dogs.  To give us chances to be as unapologetically fun and goofy as they are.

I have a print subscription to the Chron and read the full article there. After reading the article, I have to say the "Cal best" line in the digital link was nothing more than a pay wall teaser. The article dealt with how Gottlieb finally got the Magnificent 7 recruiting class of 09 to play to their potential and how she felt she had to go to UCSB to get a "head coach" visa stamp on her professional passport. I don't think Stanford was ever mentioned. Altogether a fair and nice article, especially when juxtaposed against a Tom Fitzgerald on our record-setting defense to balance the coverage.

As for the pay wall, some publications (SI, Time) give you free access to the digital subscription along with you print subscription; others don't. I don't know how the Chron system is set up. So far I haven't been able to link my print subscription to the digital one.

I think the trend is that young people do not read print, and do not pay for content.  We get grief from middle-aged friends, because we still subscribe to newspapers and magazines.

It takes some amount of time to deal with print subscriptions.  I enjoy the convenience of online content and the interaction with others that I can participate in online.  Having said that, I do need to get used to paying for stuff online.  There's an element of entitlement that my generation has with regard to free stuff--mp3s, written content, movies, etc. that needs to go away once we start having the means to pay for things (i.e. get real jobs).

Killion gets one last jab in now that kal is still alive.  Sigh.
