Some bulletin board material for Shaw - pincemob - 04-14-2013

Athlon ranked Shaw as the #20 coach behind the fellows below among others.  I am not sure how many of those guys have won BCS games and are mentioned for NFL openings, but I doubt very many of them.

- Pat Fitzgerald
- Art Briles
- Brady Hoke
- James Franklin
- Al Golden

These sorts of rankings are invariably trolling, but ranking Shaw behind Franklin, Strong and Golden is ludicrous.

Okay, I'm ignorant, but who the Sam Hill is Al Golden?

When the NFL's Eye of Sauron turns to replacement coaches - Redrum - 04-15-2013

I hope they settle on Brady Hoke, Franklin, Strong et al, instead of Shaw.

Frankly, I have a very hard time seeing a Shaw-led team winning the NC.  But that's not all Shaw's fault.  Luck and the gift to do the right thing at the right time are very important.

But,  I think there really are limits to Stanford's upside that are built in.  Not like the limits ("excuses") we used to justify the mediocrity of the past,  but limits nonetheless.  When the three-time BCS champ regularly culls its thug element by sending the worst home while managing to keep the rest (the guys who really matter as players) under control long enough to get them to play, and sends football staff in golf carts to get some of the less motivated to class...well, then you see the gap between what Stanford is willing to do to win and other schools are.

But if we win a NC while I'm sentient,  I promise to show up on campus the following Spring's Red/White game wearing a T-shirt inscribed

" I'm Not With Stupid -
    I  AM Stupid "

And I will even pay for a bunch of rotten vegetables for you to throw at me.  I'll even post a You Tube video of it.

  It'll be worth it.

Re: Some bulletin board material for Shaw - Farm93 - 04-15-2013

Redrum,
I read your post and thought..."THAT is exactly why Stanford might actually win a BCS CG at some point."

Your average BCS bowl bound coach spends December driving their kids to class and praying that they will pass enough tests to stay eligible.  Meanwhile, the players are spending their free time mastering NCAA College Football (Current Year+1) during the day and getting in brawls at bars at night.  That type of pre-bowl game prep might not be ideal, but with 30+ days there remains enough quality time to get it all to work out.

However for 2015 and beyond the BCS winner will need to win two games. And with limited time between the two rounds, the program with the best preparation skills (see Stanford) might have a big advantage.

Hey, what about last season? Yes, "Luck" wasn't there but it's hard to argue luck and doing the right thing at the right time weren't a part of our path to the Rose Bowl through all those close games.

Of course, once could argue even more luck and even better timing could have gotten even better results but that would also have immediately called into question your "I have a very hard time seeing a Shaw-led team winning the NC" statement.

Re: Some bulletin board material for Shaw - OutsiderFan - 04-15-2013

Briles is the only coach who really stands out to me on that list.  Hoke and Golden haven't really proven all that much, except that they can win at places like San Diego State and Temple, though Hoke has proven he can recruit.  Fitzgerald is OK, and it has to be tough recruiting against other private schools in your footprint, like ND and Purdue.  James Franklin deserves some credit for making Vandy competitive, but I don't remember them cracking the Top 10 yet under his watch.

David Shaw is discounted a bit because so many people think he's simply the beneficiary of riding EUTM's coattails.  What is becoming more apparent to me though is that David Shaw and Jim Harbaugh both played significant roles in building Stanford's football program.  In fact, just looking at Stanford's offense and seeing Shaw's comments after the game Saturday, Shaw has as much to do with the style of offense Stanford and the Niners play as Harbaugh.  Because the OCs are changing at Stanford and the style remains the same.  The only constant is David Shaw.

I give Fitz a lot of credit as NU historically has been a very tough place to recruit to.  He has maintained a high level of play with small and low-ranked recruiting classes, but continues to increase the attractiveness of NU as a destination.  I would still rank shaw higher . . .
Minor correction, Purdue is a state school (not private like ND).
