New 30 for 30 documentary currently airing on ESPN...pretty excellent so far.
Did not know that Elway was drafted by the Yankees 6 picks ahead of Tony Gwynn. Remarkable.

Good program. I did not know about the efforts by the Raiders & 49ers to get Elway. I did know about his baseball prowess. He was easily an All-Star talent, if not HOF.Â
What I remember from the time, more than anything, is how unpopular Elway was for resisting the draft outcome. What I hadn't appreciated from the coverage back then was how many other guys were doing the same, especially with the USFL angle. I liked the footage of Jim Kelly dissing the Bills and going to the USFL, then continuing to denigrate Buffalo. I doubt in this media age the sides could have reconciled... imagine how many times that clip would have played on Youtube (where he says "where would you rather be: Houston or Buffalo"). Anyway, I thought Elway got inordinate and unfair criticism, especially given how clearly dysfunctional Baltimore was.Â
I also did not remember Elway's wittiness. When the reporter tries to call him a hippocrite for asserting he would play for an east coast baseball team (but not the east coast Colts), he says without hesitation "they play baseball in the summertime". That was a good comeback.Â
