Today in that was fast: Daniel Marx commits - washingtonismoney - 05-05-2013

A day after being offered, FB Daniel Marx from Mission Viejo commits to Stanford. Don't believe he has other offers or ratings, as he is a fullback and hence an endangered species. Rivals has him as a two-star. No other offers reported.

Here are his highlights:

The things about his highlight video that stand out to me is that he gets yards after contact and he can catch the ball. He is not highly ranked, but that will change now that he is committed to Stanford. It will be interesting to see if he gets more offers.

Golly how I love a player who powers himself forward despite the guys trying to drag him down. Too soon to say Toby-esque, but I love his force of will.

Frankly, this should happen more often: get Stanford offer, accept on the spot.

Sean Cattouse, meet Daniel Marx.  :)

If you are a FB and get a Stanford offer, you probably have to commit on the spot.

I'm looking forward to seeing Sean Cattouse over and over again whenever they show Andrew Luck's best college clip over the next 20 years.

It's easy to see why the coaches like him - Redrum - 05-05-2013

1.  As mentioned above, he doesn't go down easily.  One hit doesn't put him away...at least not at the HS level.
2.  He is a natural receiver.  He catches the ball naturally, without awkwardness and is very fluid transitioning into his run after catch. A lot of RBs seem to hesitate, as if almost surprised they caught the ball.  Not Marx.
3.  Did you watch in the latter part of the video,  how well he blocks?  There were a couple where he just stoned his guy.  In the pocket or on the move he makes contact and makes it count.  (yeah, yeah, I know.  this is a highlight reel.  I've seen some of those highlight videos where none of the above were true.)

4.  He camped at Stanford and the coaches got to see him up close without benefit of an editing machine.  They offered.  He was smart enough to accept.

These are the type of guys who are the foundation for Stanford football's success.  Big, physical, short area operators who don't wow with combine workouts, but can play outsized roles on a football field if used properly.  The 2 star Fullback who runs a 4.8 40 can neutralize the 5 star MLB who clocks a 4.5.

As so many teams have gone to the spread and single back formations, the Fullback has become less and less valuable.  I can see a guy like Marx not being rated very high for programs like Oregon, Cal, UCLA, Arizona, but for Stanford he sure brings much more value.  So a lowly rated guy like Marx may bring down the recruiting rating average, but the reality is guys like him are far more valuable to programs who's offensive scheme can take advantage of his abilities.  In this case the rating truly doesn't matter, but it would be nice if his rating could be based on his value to Stanford, not as a college football recruit per se.

Kudos for Thunderstruck.  I am thinking the lads would look extra intimidating with Angus Young style travel threads.

Also, it should be noted that the quantity and quality of offers a player receives has a brobdingnagian influence on the player's rating. You'd hope it would actually work the other way, but not always. No surprise that a fullback would have no offers, and hence, a low rating.

Owen Marecic was a 2 star FB/MLB recruit with offers from Stanford, Army and Portland State.  I think he turned out all right.

Stanford would be fortunate indeed if Daniel Marx is the next Owen Marecic.

Some of his best highlights weren't shown until the middle third of the video.  Good stuff!
