Those few who gain admission are choosing Stanford at the highest rate ever.

One thing I recently found out was that what used to be HYP (Harvard, Yale, Princeton) is now HYPMS.

Tell me that's MIT and not Michigan.

It's MIT.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but the number of schools with yield rates >50% is extremely small. I remember a tour of Tufts back in the 90s where they talked about the 12,000 applications they got for a class of 1,100 -- but didn't mention that they admitted more than 4,000 in order to get that class of 1,100.

Should only be SP. At least Princeton has a good engineering department. Neither Harvard or Yale do. MIT doesn't have a respected liberal arts program.
Come to think of it. Should only be S. Our scout team would kick the crap out of Princeton's football team.

MIT is quite strong in philosophy.

Fortunately, my children are doing reasonably well academically, and have a variety of college choices available to them. I don't know if any of them could get in to Stanford, though, even though I own a sheepskin, but they are strong applicants. But they haven't wanted to go there.
My oldest really wanted to go to college in Manhattan, and she got in to her first choice. And she's happy there. So far so good.
My second child is very committed to both skiing and sailing, so he wants to be in a place where he can do both. Dartmouth and Amherst are high on his list, for example. He is a high school junior right now, so in a year we'll have an answer in hand.
My third - too young to say anything concrete - but he is a big Stanford football fan.
I spent six years on the MIT campus. I really enjoyed it, but I'm also happy I wasn't an undergraduate there - there is a culture of academic self-abuse that I found unhealthy. ("I have to tell everyone that I'm working really hard and complain about it.") I think that people worked as hard at Stanford, but the culture was more "In the afternoon let's go play ultimate, and then study after dinner" - I liked that much better.
But I did take advantage of the out-of-the-lab stuff that is at MIT. I learned to sail. I directed some plays. I danced on stage. My team won an intramural championship in volleyball. Not so many poets or painters that I was hanging around with, but there is more to The Institute than just its technical excellence.
There's lots of paths, and lots of good choices. It's a matter of finding yours.

Taking this back to Stanford sports, I suspect that neither she nor Brett Nottingham will give any thought to cow digestion, despite the many opportunities that Manhattan has to offer.

Nottingham's new teammates and Robbie's daughter's classmates are a real treat.

If you don't like Asians, Jews, or homosexuals, Manhattan, New York is not your place. Manhattan, Kansas might be a better destination as it has a much smaller population of the aforementioned groups.
BTW I was born in Kansas. Not kidding. I might very well be the second ethnic Asian born in Kansas. My cousin beat me by a couple weeks. I was 9 lbs at birth. The doctor proclaimed: "We've got a QB here!"

Reading this makes me realize how lucky I was to be applying in the early 1990's when the acceptance rate was in the mid-teens.

I think CowboyIndian was referring to the "Neither Harvard or Yale do" that should be "Neither Harvard nor Yale does".
But I really wouldn't know because I went to school where the English language was a complete afterthought, and we preferred it that way. Although, the best English literature professor I had (albeit from a pretty small list) was at Tech. The guy was awesome and I sort of cheated my way into two of his classes back when registration was done on paper. He was an assistant professor at both UCLA and GT, commuting from LA to Atlanta as necessary. Both schools were on the quarter system so it worked out somehow. I asked him why. "Money is money. Also, I know a few stewardesses...."Â

LOL! And that's why my friends I was an Economics major. Not good enough of a writer to major in the liberal arts. Not good enough at math to do science or engineering.

When I arrived at Stanford from the Midwest in the 60s, I thought it was really exciting to think I'd actually meet Asian-Americans. Started chatting with a Chinese guy in the bookstore during Orientation week, only to find that he was from - Detroit.
