Jim Murray could always turn a phrase. Growing up in Southern California, I didn't realize how lucky I was to spend my youth listening to Vin Scully and Chick Hearn on the radio, and reading Murray in the daily newspaper. I am just going to sit around and be nostalgic for a few minutes.

I couldn't agree more, RM. My LOVE of sports came from their descriptions of the action and the drama, as well as the back stories, that put sports within a larger context. I would turn off the sound on the TV and listen to them call the game on the radio while watching the TV. To this day, I could listen to Vin Scully call a game from years ago and still be enwrapped. Chick invented so many phrases on the fly that became part of our basketball lexicon.
I have to add Dick Enberg calling the Rams and Jimmy Lennon announcing boxing at the Olympic Auditorium (and movies) which was on TV made growing up in So.Cal special.

I didn't have a television until I was 23. I thought I was missing out on watching the Lakers and everything else that was on TV. Turns out I was lucky.
I almost mentioned Dick Enberg, but the lasting effect of the Rams' broadcasts is that I can still sing all of the words to the Budweiser, Olympia and Hamms beer songs. My parents were mortified that their six-year-old could belt those out after church.

Griffin78 and RM, I agree with you both. How lucky I was to grow up in SoCal and have the privilege of listening to Scully and Hearn, and to be able to read Jim Murray. My dad was a big Laker and Dodger fan - he really didn't care for football all that much. I remember going to watch the Lakers at the Sports Arena, and the Dodgers at the Coliseum. Since I grew up in Pasadena, I also went to many Rose Bowl games as a kid. My high school played its big games at the Rose Bowl, and my high school graduation was also held there.
