Replacement for "All Right Now" -
Bruce Wang - 05-30-2013
Here is what is sure to be an unpopular, if not blasphemous, opinion around these parts. I don't like "All Right Now". There I said it. It's not that I hate or even dislike it. Just doesn't do anything for me. And I always forget to jump.
If you could replace "All Right Now" for another Stanford anthem, what would it be? There are some songs out there that just work as a sporting event sing-along. The all-time best: "Hang On Sloopy" is already taken by my other alma mater.
Here's my nomination:

I dunno - Redrum - 05-30-2013
Lots of songs work with a 28 year old Springsteen (or Mick Jagger) out front and a great sound mixer on the board pulling him up out of the noise. But I've listened to a LOT of transplanted songs performed by the LSJUMB and the results aren't always good.  I think the low point was
White Punks on Dope, a song that was high concept and seemed humorously self-satirical...but was a muddled musical mess by the time it made it from the field to the ears in the stands.
Basically, I want music that inspires us all to lop off Trojan heads and hold them up as trophies. ( I call first dibs on Lane Kiffin). Something that would sound great and taunt the Trojan fans as the band marched off the field and into an echoey Coliseum tunnel after another win .
I nominate something this, which if you listen to the scoring, would translate very well to the instrument "voices" in a college band. Got beat, drive and a groove you could see dancing to while on K.al's Mem. Stadium field. (I'd probably drop the first few vocal bars and get into the groove right off)

"All Right Now" is the greatest fight song/anthem ever created.
It's the ringtone on my phone.
Never replace it.
Well, there's this - Redrum - 05-30-2013
Guess which Pac-12 school also plays All Right Now. As they say after the biker gang moves in next door: There goes the neighborhood. Maybe it's time to move.
Actually, I'm not against All Right Now. I just like different or
additional crowd frenzy music.

That's silly. We were playing the song first.
As they say in so many movies: we don't negotiate with terrorists. If Literature's Greatest Losers relocated to Mountain View, would we carpet-bomb Silicon Valley just in case?
No.

You got it all wrong Garvin. Everybody knows that the red-hot pokers go in the eyes. Flesh eating insects go in the ears.Â

I guess "All Right Now" is OK as far as defacto fight songs go, but I don't confuse it with "the greatest fight song ever created." That is reserved for the likes of "On Wisconsin", "Anchors Aweigh", "The Victors", "Aggie War Hymn", "On Brave Old Army Team", "ND Victory March", and I'd even throw "Ramblin' Wreck" on the pile, if only because knowing it was the one thing Nixon and Khrushchev had in common. Plus its main themes are drinking, swearing, and gambling. Now that is bad ass; not raising parking rates or tricking me in love, or what the hell are those lyrics anyway?
Of all the songs available in 1970, that's what they went with? I guess it works in a way, even if I would have pushed for "Time is Tight" by Booker T and the MGs which was released in 1969. Can't screw up the lyrics and could you imagine hitting the field to Hammond B3 power chords? I guess I couldn't either. Actually this would really work for basketball intros at Maples. Assuming anyone is there to watch the intro.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nkHR6DCQRA (And if you are screwing around on Youtube, check out the live 1970 Oakland Coliseum version that had CCR's jaws dropping backstage.)
But think of it this way. Stanford uses a 43 year old pop anthem as its fight song. For current students it's like getting down to say "The Stein Song" or "Puttin' on the Ritz" would have been for those of you in school in the 70s.
No replacement suggestions, but "Hang on Sloopy" sux. :P

Bad taste is worse than insanity.Â
I'll give you an up arrow for cajones.
If the song no longer existed and I had to pick, I think some sort of reworking of this would capture the mainstream weirdness that is SU.
And the up up up UP UP UP! could replace the all right now jump.

"All Right Now" at least fits the fan mindset after a TD or a basketball win.
Of course, if "All Right Now" were to be replaced it should be with a contemporary song. So all of you with dreams of alternate 70s or 80s classic rock tunes are missing the mark. Sit in the stands during pre-game warm-ups because one of THOSE songs would be the appropriate update, if we are going to update by converting a pop tune to fight song. Think - Kayne, 50 cent, One Direction, Demi Lovato, etc. And once THAT set of options is on the table, "All Right Now" is looking all right for now.
Alternatively, the school could go and convert a pop song for the Pac-12's true target audience---ASIA. Perhaps a new fight song could help capture the attention of that Asian market. A quick conversion of J-Pop, K-Pop or the ultimate 1st mover advantage C-pop could bring home some new views AND online subscriber money! Stanford might have light viewership in the USA, but we could be the most popular college football team for 1.3+ billion people in China!!! ::)

Funny -- All Right Now and WPOD (along with the Stanford Hymn) are the songs that to me are unimpeachable... Because several other lsjumb songs make me roll my eyes. For some reason they play this incredibly crappy john entwistle song "one at a time" ... Furthermore I dont't like their "5:15" ... And every once in a while they dredge up some pop hit that didn't need to be a lsjumb song.
I salute the guy above that (I think) was saying positive things about On Wisconsin and so forth. I have to admit, I just love classic school marching bands and when good themes are cranked out well it is awesome. He later made a comment about the Stein Song. The Stein Song is a brobdingnagian favorite of mine and I would love to hoarsely shout along... About my allegiance to Maine, I guess.
I would keep all right now, I would throw away a dozen others. And ... Once I saw the band, doing their Pre-game loop around the track, stop in front of the Shady Side (back when that was a major cultural divide I guess) and crank out a mind blowing Benny Goodman or Glenn Miller. Not sure how much of it was respect or being cute. That's where I would go... If you have a brobdingnagian-ass bunch of horns, use it!
Forgot to say-- no Springsteen, no. Maybe his songs have the right blasty sound. But it's just too much a New Jersey thing, I can not find a single thread in common with Stanford.

It's definitely more than time for the LSJUMB to do something new. All Right Now is 40-some years ago. They don't have to ditch it (it's become traditional) , but they should add some new traditions of their own. I really liked how Oregon State plays opponents' fight songs as a tribute. Whatever they choose, it's got to come form them.
It's funny how a bunch of people all out of school for more than ten years are clamoring for something new.

I'd never actually seen the entire video. It's pretty funny. It would be great if the band played it. Of course, it has no chance of replcing All Right Now.

ARN isn't going anywhere. I think most people in Band don't get tired of it, even after four years. I think nearly every bandie who goes to enough games forms an unbreakable association between ARN and the first classic victory they witness. For me, it's the football upset at U$C in 2007. The song is the soundtrack to seeing SoCal's Finest run off the field, National Championship hopes dashed. It's hard to imagine memories like that losing their influence over keeping ARN in its role.
Fun Fact: I didn't write the arrangement, but "Everything Is Quite Decent at the Moment" ("Oompah ARN") on the
The One, The Only album is my contribution to the song's history, from a joke in the script for the "Marching Cardinal" show.

Hell no, I don't want to see (or hear) that "All Right Now" has been replaced. Sure it doesn't have the martial quality of a traditional college fight song but at this point I can't ever see LSJUMB ever playing anything remotely like 'Fight On' or the UCLA/kal song; in fact, just the thought of that coming out of the Band section at any Stanford home game makes me cringe.
I will admit that some rock/pop/whatever songs translate better than others. "Love Cats" by the Cure? Not so much. "White Punks on Dope" by The Tubes?? Love that song and I've been sad to see that it's kinda fallen out of the Band's repertoire. I am surprised, though, at some of the songs that have escaped the Band. "Kashmir??" C'mon, guys! In hindsight, that should have been an obvious addition (and a long time ago at that) but 'zona was the first school I heard play it and now so do many others.
What I wouldn't mind hearing is better musicianship out of the LSJUMB because when you see someone running around the field banging on a stainless steel sink, it's clear that that's not a prority.

I love "All Right Now" and don't forget "Yellow River" from yesteryear, either. Please don't think me an old grumbler, though, if I'd just like to hear "Come Join the Band"Â every now and then. You can dance to it, Dick.

They always play it before halftime.

Come on, Publius. "Hang on Sloopy"? Are you kidding me? If you really think that's the all-time best, you unfortunately have lost your musical credibility. What's your second choice, "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus?
Nothing wrong with "All Right Now" . . .
