Pretty ridiculous situation. $20 for a self wash? How does the NCAA even find out that a collegiate athlete used the schools hose and water to wash their car?

Quote:the NCAA asked the golfer to pay the school $20, which they said was the value of the water and hose

Is there a drought in the area?
Did she get to keep the hose?

My daughter just graduated from UP and moved into an apartment a few miles away. (Gainfully employed....woot!)  A few questions and comments:

Despite perfect chamber of commerce weather over graduation weekend in early May, it does rain in Portland. Cars do need to be washed periodically.

The cost of water doesn't necessarily have much to do with how much it rains in any particular region, as water supplies could be hundreds of miles away. I didn't drive up into the Bull Run Watershed to check, and while it was a pretty benign winter, I don't know about any drought.

I am not really familiar with garden hose rental rates in the area.

However, if she gets to keep the hose and it is a decent hose, she may have come out ahead. (Fred Meyer is where most UP kids would go to buy a hose and their website sucks.  But the absolute cheapest hose at Lowe's is $25.)

I think other students can wash cars on campus.  (I used to wash my car in front of Mirelees and I didn't even live there.  Once you know where the hose bibs are......)

Who the hell was watching some kid wash her car?

Who the hell turned her in?

$20 and a coupon will get your car detailed in some places.

How much did the NCAA spend to avoid $20 of 'illicit' benefit to one golfer?

The NCAA is idiotic.

Man, you don't watch many bad movies about college life, do you?

A staple of every bad college movie is the sorority bikini car wash.  Inevitably ends up in a soap-suds fight amid squeals and laughter.  But you went to Ga. Tech,  so that explains why you're so clueless.

would exclude Animal House and Old School, and I don't recall car wash scenes in either of those movies, so yes, I am pretty clueless. During my time at Tech I operated my own motor vehicle only during my senior year. It was my dad's hail-damaged (beyond the point of repair) 1978 Audi 4000 Turbo.  I washed the car once that entire year by driving it to Key West, FLA and timing the blinding thunderstorm on the Florida Turnpike near Orlando perfectly. There were two women in the car with me and they were both bikini-clad. I think. Karen for sure. Not sure about Lisa. Anyway, they were not affiliated with any sorority, and in fact only one was a Georgia Tech student. (Hooray for Scotties!)  I am fairly certain I spent four years in Atlanta without witnessing one single soap-sudded squeal of female laughter.  Now if you wish to discuss chocolate pudding wrestling in front of the Teke house.....

(I laughed really hard at your post Redrum....)

The NCAA has absolutely no scope of materiality when it comes to extra benefits.

It's so bad that if you are tutoring an athlete, loan him/her a pencil and forget to get it back, it's a violation you are supposed to report.

Gets a little silly if you ask me.
