WBB: Trina Patterson leaves -
81alum - 06-24-2013
Earlier this month it was announced that Trina Patterson would be leaving and taking a position as an Assistant Coach at Old Dominion. Is there a background story to this that was not made public in the press release? It would seem to be a lateral move to a less prestigious program, it so it raises questions. However, it would allow her to return to her home in Virginia--so the explanation could simply be geographic.
We have not much discussed the quality of the assistant coaches. Trina replaced Bobbie Kelsey who went to Wisconsin to become a head coach, as I recall. What kind of a job did Trina do, and what kind of a replacement will Tara be looking for? Will it be someone to work with the posts? I would think so, given that we have so many young posts on the way next year.
Tara sometimes hires former players as assistant coaches, although Bobbie Kelsey had been an assistant coach for 3 years at Virginia Tech before returning to Stanford. Do we have any former players (other than Charmin Smith and Katy Steding) who are currently assistant coaches at other universities? Tara also tries to keep her coaching staff racially diverse, and currently it is all white. The one thing she does NOT do is to hire men--she takes great pride in mentoring young female coaches and has expressed her concern that WBB is drifting toward more male coaches.
So, anyone you would like to recommend if someone in the program reads this thread?

Agree on diversity. I don't believe a back story.Â
SoCal HS coach of the year: Nyguard
Just named HC at riverside iirc Jimenez.Â
Flores at Yale.
Lindy grad assistant at Okla
Clyburn HC at M-A
Mel Murphy HC this coming season at Gunn
Lauren Greif at Stanford
Beth Burns quit suddenly as HC at SDS
Interesting but not much help. :)

Vanessa Nygaard is an interesting possibility.Â
After her college and pro careers were over, she was an Assistant at Long Beach State, at Pepperdine, and for 2 WNBA teams before doing a terrific job as HC at Windward in LA this year. But she does not help with diversity, and she might not want the the job if her family is comfortably settled where it is.
Quote:Two weeks before official practice started in November, L.A. Windward first-year girls basketball Coach Vanessa Nygaard gave birth to twins.
Talk about time-management issues.
Nygaard not only balanced being a new mother with her coaching duties, she managed to guide the Wildcats to 32 consecutive victories and a Southern Section Division 4AA championship.

Is Beth Burns a Stanford alum?
Milena Flores has been an assistant with Princeton and now with Yale. She seems like a possibility.
In another five-10 years I would think Nneka would be a superb candidate for coaching, given her maturity and leadership skills. But I think she has a few other things to do first. I also wonder about Candice, although her career is still going and I wonder if she would be interested in coaching at some point.
I imagine one of the key factors will be to find someone who can talk to recruits and their families effectively about the program and the Stanford experience, as well as coaching during the season. It will probably have to be someone who is particularly adept at helping to develop posts.

The new assistant coach is Tempie Brown from Michigan State.

Interesting choice. 14 years of coaching experience, but she worked primarily with the guards (and apparently did a great job with them.) She is also a conditioning expert and has an MA in exercise physiology. As a player at Michigan, she scored over 1000 points.

Amy has coached the post players at Stanford for 25 years. I think our post coaching is fine.
:)
Beth Burns worked at Stanford.Â
Vanessa must have 3 children if twins. She had one before.
It's Tempie who in April was promoted to assistant HC at Michigan State. Quite a add for us to be the 3rd assistant and she is at our Elite Camp this week. Compare that to the MBB hire
