Pretty much confirming what we know about JH. He'a a go for the jugular kind of guy.
Article makes the confrontation between JH and Petey a little less antagonistic then I had previously thought.
Gotta agree that perhaps only short of winning the Rose Bowl, stomping U$C is the highlight of being a Stanford player, coach or fan.

It's interesting that no one has ever revealed which Trojan defender told Beeler he was going to quit the game if Stanford ran power one more time. I've seen that quote before, but it's never been attributed.
I agree that a win over US.C, especially a good US.C team that's got national respect, is the most satisfying win (while a loss to Ca.l may be the most disappointing.) I remember being so giddy that day after the game had ended. I still go on youtube and watch highlights of that game sometimes. In fact, I think I'll go spend 5 minutes in Nirvana right now...

No, this is the best part of the article:
Im still happy we went for two, despite what people might think of etiquette, says James McGillicuddy, who was a fifth-year senior back in 2009. They had Snoop Dogg on the sideline, Will Ferrell, all this hype, all these stars everywhere. And it was just, like, we had 65 [guys] on the sideline. We dont have any celebrities. But were going to come down in front of your team, in front of your school, in front of all your fanfare, in your, in your incestual L.A. scene, [and] put a beating on you.

We don't have any celebrities? Not sure I buy that one.
Don't know if Condoleezza Rice was on the sidelines for that game, but we sure use her for recruiting.

I thought the same thing when I read that quote. We may not have the hangers on, but it's been great to see Tiger, Elway, and Plunkett on the sidelines for the recent bowl games, and it won't be long before Andrew Luck feels comfortable enough to be there as well.

Agreed. Beating U S C is thrilling, but at this point beating C A L is more of a relief. And I was lucky enough to be at that '09 U S C game, and I'm not sure anything will ever match the feeling I had during the 4th quarter and immediately afterwards. At the time, and still today, I thought it was the most enjoyable sporting event I had ever attended. After any college game, the two teams usually meet at midfield and players who know one another exchange pleasantries. Not this time. From high in the stands it was fun to watch as the U S C players simply sprinted towards the locker room. Harbaugh noticed and enjoyed it, too. When I watched the game afterwards, you could hear him saying, "Look at them! Look at them run!"
Good times.

OK, finally a board text substitution I can get behind:
Let's substitute US
C to be "these mothertuckers" [sic] every time someone types it in.

The quote may not have been totally accurate, but what I liked about it was that it showed that JH had been successful in instilling the blue collar, bring your lunchbox to work mentality in his offensive linemen.

Wasn't Chris Marinelli, the original Tunnel Workers Union member, on that team?

Let's delay his roaming the Stanford sidelines during Bowl games for 15-20 years. Until then, I'd rather see him worrying about beating the New England Patriots or another AFC team in the play offs. The only reason Toby was on the sideline of the Orange Bowl is because the Vikings were sitting at home for the play offs.

I've heard a first-hand account (does that make it second hand?) of Harbaugh losing his mind during these drives, swearing across the field at Petey and USC players. I was laughing at the story at the time, but then I realized that Harbaugh might actually be crazy.Â

I live in SoCal and so get a lot of USC coverage. Although it has been a while, I am pretty sure I read an article at the time that identified Taylor Mayes, SC's supposedly all-world player who I think benefited from typical SC over-hyping, as the player who said he would walk off the field if we ran power one more time. That is who I have thought said it.
And for what it's worth, I interpreted JH's decision to go for 2 more as an expression of his disgust and contempt for SC quitting than an expression of personal animosity toward PC.

Taylor Mays-Late was who I recall too. I believe it was a player's parent who confirmed on another site.

Well, except for the incestual part. And the movie stars. You haven't been hearing C.al's Working Class Heroes thing as long as we have, but believe me, C.al players and fans (used to) revel in it. That pre-game coin toss/ gang smack talking BS prior to the 2010 Big Game seems to have been its most recent high point. Of course, after that you have to (wait for it) "
shut up and play football."

I don't think it was animosity toward Petey as a person. What I do think Harbaugh was doing was making a statement that the U$C football program was no longer numero uno and that there was a new sheriff in town.

Agreed. More impressive because if most people had even thought of that great line, the delivery would have been something like "in your incestial, incestrual, incestua -- you know what I mean about the LA scene -- and put a beating on you.".

Yep, it's always good to pronounce a non-word with confidence instead of fumbling over it.
(oed.com has no entry for "incestual". I'm guessing "incestuous" was meant, but I'm not really sure how that applies to the USC scene.)

Screw that. When it comes to words, I side with intuitionists who just go for it.
