Not that it matters, more out of curiosity... - OutsiderFan - 06-29-2013

Why doesn't Chryst garner a fifth star from Scout (#2 QB), Rivals (# 2 QB), and ESPN (#1 QB)?

Is he going to get a fifth star?  If not, why not?  Not known as a runner, but he sure isn't a stiff, moves well and can really throw on the run.  Plus he has great size for a QB.  Not to mention his pedigree and the fact he's in a pro stye offense in high school.  What more do scouting services want?

Who knows, but they may be waiting to see how he does in the Elite 11 finals, or maybe even to see how his final season goes. Apparently he had a somewhat lackluster performance in a preliminary camp.
Anyway it's worth noting that Andrew Luck didn't get his fifth star until fairly late in his senior year.

Absolutely nothing to gain by making Chryst a 5-star - Redrum - 06-29-2013

Scout can take its own sweet time.  The kid has a whole senior season to show that he deserves it.  At this point, his rating and ranking don't affect his college offers or opportunities.  As for risk,  Scout is comfortably with the pack ranking him so far.  If he has a bad elite 11 or a rocky senior season,  they think they look bad ...and their eyes are ever on Rivals, ESPN and others.  And I don't care whether Chryst is a 2-star or a 5-star.  All I care about is winning and only the coaches can make the decision which players will be likely to accomplish that.

He'll probable get downgraded like most guys do when they commit to Stanford.

That may have once been the case, but I don't think it is any more. Most recently Daniel Marx got upgraded when he chose Stanford.

I used to complain as much as anyone about Stanford not getting enough respect, but we are now.

They don't get downgraded until they're in Voldemort competition.

Kyle Allen (A&M) won the Golden Gun jersey as the most accurate passer after day one of the Elite11 camp.  Uncommitted QB Sean White was second. No news about Keller's performance.

Marx wasn't rated at all before he committed. I just distinctly remember Noor Davis being a top 30 player in the nation per Rivals before committing then ending up the 15th best player in Florida

I think Scout used to always give 5 stars to the top 50 players in a class but I think they've stopped that. Rivals is much pickier in giving out a 5th star. It also seems like every recruiting service is slowing down on giving out a 5th star this year. But if Chryst ends up #1 or #2 in any service each will definitely give him a 5th star.

For comparison's sake, here's a year-by-year accounting of the five-star players according to Rivals.

2014: 18
2013: 33
2012: 32
2011: 26
2010: 26
2009: 33
2008: 30
2007: 29
2006: 28
2005: 28

Rivals always gives out fifth stars to a certain number of players following the summer camp season, and then a few more after the actual football season. They've currently got Chryst at #31. Assuming he does well at the Elite 11 or continues to perform well for Paly High, that fifth star will probably come.

While I would tend to agree that college performance far outweighs recruiting rankings, we can't dismiss it completely. It's never a bad thing to have Stanford Football mentioned as recruiting pundits are going over the top recruits. And considering there are usually fewer than thirty five-star players, it would be nice to have one of them headed to Stanford.
