Condolences to LSJU - 71Bear - 06-30-2013

Am I the only person who likes to read the obits?  I am fascinated by the lives of "ordinary people", so many of whom have led interesting lives.  War heroes, "do-gooders", immigrants, people from modest means and people from not so modest means.....

Anyway, I read this morning that Anne Paye passed away.  It was evident that she made a difference as a teacher.  Her quotation from earlier this year (see below) is one that anyone who has an appreciation of the written and spoken word will enjoy reading.

The only perplexing passage in the obit was the following:  "Anne is survived by....her Royal Standard poodle, Bear".  A loyal and generous Stanford alum with a pet named Bear?  Who woulda thunk?

Here's the quote....

"...I have always believed that words are important, that they can bridge the distance between us, that they can provide clarity in times of crisis, that they can bring reason to even the most perplexing situations, and that they can ease the pain and trouble that life inevitably foists upon humankind..."

I didn't know Anne well but my wife and I took her Summer Shakespeare Program class at Foothill College twice.  The course was built around that year's program at Ashland and included a long weekend trip to Oregon to see the plays at the end of the class.  Anne was a bright, articulate and thoughtful teacher and many in the community audited this class each year due to her presence.  For those who didn't know Anne, in addition to being a longtime member of the Stanford community she was also the mother of John and Kate Paye of Stanford Football and Basketball fame.

When Bear is a poodle, who's being mocked?

And one could easily argue the the Stanford football team has a whole bunch of pet Bears.
