Axe Stickers - Bruce Wang - 07-09-2013

There are some of us that don't like the helmet stickers.  As a person who was an Ohio State fan first, I love them.  I remember being particularly impressed with how many Owen Marecic had on his helmet.  Does anybody here know the criteria for awarding them at Stanford?  Did it change with Shaw?

I wish the Athletic Department sold the stickers.  I could use them to reward my toddler.  They definitely would have come in handy during potty training.

I love the axe stickers.  What kind of person doesn't like the axe stickers?

You using them to potty train your children would diminish their coolness, I am afraid.

#1. Helmet stickers are clutter that actually detract from the shell.

#2. Axe stickers give cal some significance.

I think Axe stickers can be awarded both for meeting team goals and for individual plays. For example, if the defense holds the opposing offense to a specified goal for points or yards, that might be worth a sticker for everyone on the defense. Or an interception might be worth a sticker for the individual. I don't think the exact criteria ever have been made public.

Traditionalists and those that prefer celebrating team success over individual achievements.

Harbaugh, a Michigan man, brought them here.  Funny enough, Michigan discontinued their use.

I like the helmet stickers. It can not only be a way to motivate the team, but it can also be a way to intimidate opponents. It's a way of announcing so-and-so's a badass. His helmet is covered. Also, I noticed that the team has different ways to fill it up. Last year, they filled up one half at a time. Other years it's bottom to top. I think that doing half at a time is a way to track progress, whether the team or player is improving or is working hard throughout the season.

Re: Axe Stickers - Leftcoast - 07-09-2013

It's a game played by 18-24 year olds - and they love 'em.  Sometimes those of us decidedly NOT in that demographic forget this.  If alumni and fans are going to draw a line and grumble we should pick something more important than cluttered helmets.

I think those of us who post here get this but I'm forever running into more hide-bound fans who don't.

Found this ESPN video which is relevent to the topic. Stanford is discussed quite often.

here is the link (my embedding isn't working): espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5854843

I remember receiving these stickers in high school for individual achievements during a game as well as games won. Although it was understood that winning the game was the goal and a team effort was necessary to accomplish that task, it didn't detract from each player's desire to be recognized by the coaches for an exceptional or dominating performance. It was special for the coaches to recognize a player in front of the whole team.

Re: Axe Stickers - Red State - 07-09-2013

The nationwide trend among colleges is to eliminate helmet stickers. At one point, around 2/3 of D1 programs had them. Now, less than 1/4 include them. Must be an awful lot of grumbling by old farts, and, so sadly, many disheartened 18-24 year olds.  ;D

I wonder if the PC types give any consideration that the downtrend in stickers may have to do with their association with war? After all, the use of stickers emanates from fighter pilots who placed them on their planes after successful attacks on the enemy.

Who introduced helmet stickers to the world of college football? Ohio State's Woody Hayes, a fanatical war historian and annual Vietnam visitor who frequently used war analogies to inspire his troo, er, players.

Can we cancel out the warlike nature with just a more appropriate choice of stickers?

Didn't realize L.ane K.iffin had put his proposed helmet sticker design online.

LOL!  :D  I knew I was onto something with this topic.  We did the stickers.  I just thought that stickers like this would have gotten the job done faster.

In the end, I would venture an hypothesis that an overabundance of "axe" imagery could ultimately lead to shy bladder syndrome in the developing male.

Need to run it by Zimbardo.

Re: Axe Stickers - ChicagoCard - 07-09-2013

Why were there no stickers in the Rose Bowl? I somehow like them with the road uniforms, and less so with the red jerseys. Just checked and they had them in the Orange Bowl.

Re: Axe Stickers - yvonne - 07-09-2013

I'm just happy to hear that oman is out of nappies.

I just wish we had Marecic... - Redrum - 07-09-2013

still with room for one more season of axe stickers

Re: Axe Stickers - Hank 91 - 07-10-2013

Born in Michigan, the Wolverines were my first favorite college football team, so I was thrilled when Harbaugh brought in the helmet sticker. Love 'em. And remember when the 1979 Pirates started with gold stars on the caps? They weren't my team, but I loved those, too.

Re: Axe Stickers - LuckE2Bhere - 07-10-2013

If I recall correctly, Harbaugh used them to recognize/reward more team-oriented accomplishments and behaviors, as opposed to just memorializing TDs, interceptions, sacks, etc.  Pretty sure we had practice squad guys with stickers on their helmets, with guys like Owen Marecic struggling to hold up their heads, due to the additional weight of so many stickers for critical blocks, etc.  8)

Re: Axe Stickers - TreeWeird - 07-10-2013

I hate helmet stickers.
My middle school football team had helmet stickers.
I was a terrible player.
Middle school was hard enough without sitting on the bench with no bloody helmet stickers.

I hate helmet stickers.

Seeing Stanford win is good therapy, though.
