The Gang of Four - Hank 91 - 07-17-2013

Here's an interesting piece from Grantland analyzing the Gang of Four -- Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson, and Colin Kaepernick.

Re: The Gang of Four - Bruce Wang - 07-17-2013

A close friend works in an NFL front office (not the Colts, Niners, Seahawks or Skins).  He went on and on about how Wilson, RG3 and Kap had better seasons than Luck. I asked him of those 4 QBs who would he take. He didn't hesitate and said Luck.  I don't think there's a GM or coach in the league that would not trade any player straight up for Luck.

Re: The Gang of Four - Hank 91 - 07-18-2013

I think you're right. At the end of that Grantland piece the author indicated they'd be doing a piece on trade value soon, and I expect Luck to be at the top. Jump ahead to 2023, and I wouldn't be surprised if Luck were winning the Super Bowl and starting the Pro Bowl while RGIII, Wilson, and Kaepernick are out of football.

" Jump ahead to 2023, and I wouldn't be surprised if Luck were winning the Super Bowl and starting the Pro Bowl while RGIII, Wilson, and Kaepernick are out of football."

Well, Luck has got to stay healthy.  RGIII already has some issues w/ his wheels.

The thing is I would HATE to see Luck go into the category of Great QBs Who Never Won The Big One because he played for crappy team(s).  It might be that his current coaching staff and management could fail at draft evaluation, player development, resource ($$) commitment or just plain gameday coaching.  Maybe the management will try to do things on the (relatively) cheap and fail to build the TEAM around Luck.  And, if they fail building those key ingredients, then Luck might end his career with lots of sympathy for his plight, but no Super Bowls or Pro Bowls as individual accomplishments.

Re: The Gang of Four - Hank 91 - 07-18-2013

My point was that given Luck's playing style as compared to the other three, it's more likely that he will still be healthy a decade from now.

Re: The Gang of Four - fullmetal - 07-18-2013

Luck's got his old OC back, his targets back, and hopefully gets an upgrade at OL/RB.  Defense?  Who needs defense when your offense can rack 'em up arcade-style?

Re: The Gang of Four - Bruce Wang - 07-18-2013

This is why I think Luck will go Disneyland more often than his peers.  Money is not his priority.  If it was, he would have left Stanford early.  You would see him on Subway commercials.  He's about winning.  He will take less money so a team can afford more talent, or to go to a better organization.  Say what you will about Irsay, he spends money.  The Colts probably could have won more Super Bowls if Payme Manning wasn't so greedy or a playoff choke artist.

Re: The Gang of Four - Leftcoast - 07-18-2013

Ouch - A bit tough on Manning there don't you think?  He was more loyal to the Colts tha they were to him.

Re: The Gang of Four - 71Bear - 07-18-2013

There is no way that Luck will be playing in the Pro Bowl in '23.  Why?  Because I don't think the Pro Bowl will be around in the next decade.  Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see it fold after the upcoming season.

As for the four QB's, I'll take Kaep.  The combo of a superior coach, a great supporting cast and raw talent equals stardom.  Luck is damn good but he isn't playing in a program that is driven as SF.  That will hold him back........

Of course, I'll take Aaron Rodgers over both of them.  ;-)

I would put my money on Cam being better than all of them except Luck

Re: The Gang of Four - PrinceLightfoot - 07-19-2013

Football will change a little bit, but it will certainly not be going away at least not in the next 10 years. The amount of profits generated at both the university and pro levels ensures that it will remain a fixture in our entertainment culture for the remainder of our lifetimes.

In regards to Cam Netwon, it is interesting that the star of the 2011 draft seems to take a backseat whenever a conversation covering the merits of pro football QBs arises. The ability to read the coverage of a defense consistently and passing accurately is still paramount for NFL QBs. When your QB is the lead rusher for your team, that is not a franchise QB - that is someone too banged up to play effectively after 5-7 years. Pick him up for Fantasy Football, but sell him if you're talking about reality.

I think 71Bear meant that the Pro Bowl might not be around in 10 years, and I was actually thinking the same thing when I referenced the Pro Bowl earlier in the thread. It just keeps getting more and more ridiculous.

Oops! My misunderstanding and thanks. The Pro Bowl game is a joke and agree that it will probably go away. The title "Pro Bowler" may still remain though even if the game is not played.

Come to think of it, Payme-a-ton might be better.  What irks me about him is how many cheesy commercial he's in. The worst is the one where he cheers on his fans doing their jobs, which I find patronizing.  When the Pats showed him another early exit, the fans at Gillette started chanting "Cut That Meat".  Priceless.

I do a lot work with a law firm in Indianapolis and I told them when Luck hoists his first Lombardi, they will forget Paymeaton.  When Luck hoists another, they'll just remember all the times he choked in the playoffs.

I don't care what you say about Peyton...anybody who makes this video is OK with me:

Now THAT'S funny!  :P

Re: The Gang of Four - 71Bear - 07-19-2013

Peyton is to Marino as Brady is to Montana......

And I'll take Lombardi's over numbers every time....

Re: The Gang of Four - fullmetal - 07-20-2013

I agree that Luck's future successes will do away with a lot of the Peyton worshipping, esp among the younger fans (and the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitude).  But Peyton's crazy commercials have to be some of the funniest NFL work out there, esp given his focused, almost robotic approach to the game.

I concede the point that the guy has comedic acting chops.  Winning the big game on the other hand, is not his forte.
