Troy Walters recognition - Hey - 07-18-2013

Troy comes in at #21 of the best receivers in the past 15 years.  On his twitter page he was gracious and noted that he only had one BCS scholarship offer coming out of high school.  I love these unheralded recruits who come in and shine.  Marecic, Bademosi, Doug Baldwin, and Brevin Knight come to mind.  Before Harbaugh, a lot of the recruits didn't have any other offers listed on their bio pages besides Stanford.  Times have really changed.

Thanks for pointing this out!

It is nice to see Troy come in higher than receivers like Robert Woods.  As I recall, Troy's senior year was amazing, but he showed steady improvement all four years.  I doubt that he would be remembered as one of our all time greats had it not been for that senior year ending in the Rose Bowl, not to mention catching that bomb in Pasadena with a cast on his arm (am I remembering that properly?)  One wonders how that Rose Bowl would have turned out had it not been for those last minute injuries.

Or if he hadn't been held all game long. Refs just let it go.

My most memorable Troy Walters play...

It was a really hot day.  UCLA was in the house.  Stanford had the ball on its own two yard line, Walters split wide to the right.  Before the ball was snapped, I noticed the Bruin CB step closer to Walters.  A look behind him showed there was no Safety on that side of the field.  I turned to my friend and said, "look at Walters!  he's got man coverage with no safety help!  This is gonna be a 98 yard touchdown, watch!"

Obviously Joe Borchard saw the same thing and had the same thoughts.  The ball was snapped, Walters beat the corner at the LOS, and as he ran free into the open Foster Field grass, Borchard lobbed the perfect pass to a now wide open Walters, who took it in and raced the rest of the way for I believe the longest TD catch in Stanford history.

Never will forget yelling at my friend as Walters was hauling in the catch, "I told, you it would be a 98 yard touchdown!!!"
