Re: More cable carriage problems - OutsiderFan - 07-25-2013

The Pac-12 is probably waiting to see what happens with the SEC network (no, not ESPN) before capitulating to DTV on the all or nothing front.

This is probably a naive question, but what is the deal with the BIG Network on DTV?  Is it on the basic package the Pac-12 wants to be on, or is it on the sports package as well?  If it's on the basic package, I can see the Pac-12's point, but the BIG has a much larger audience than the Pac-12.  That's just a reality the Pac-12 is going to have to accept.

Larry Scott would be much better off telling DTV the Pac-12 will agree to be on the sports package only, but only if DTV carries the regional Pac-12 Networks.  That way each side gives a little.  This seems like the most sensible path to an agreement.

On another note, I've never seen anyone on this board or any other one say they have the Pac-12 Cal/Stanford channel and that they have any particular affinity to it.  Does anyone here have the channel and have an opinion of it?

I believe (though I may be wrong) that that's the one included in the cable package. I like it, but I haven't really been watching TV as much as I used to. After this football season I'm probably dumping cable. I only need it for 5 months out of the year, may as well only have it five months out of the year.

I have the UC/LSJU channel on HD.  I didn't bother watching it last year after the first couple of games because the overall production value was so poor.  Crappy announcers, terrible camera angles and lousy direction/production.  It appeared that they got all their personnel from the "Krelman School of Broadcasting".

Given the option of watching the SEC, Big 12 or Big Ten on Fox, CBS or ESPN with superior production value or watching a terrible telecast on the P12 network, I'll take the superior telecast every time.

Re: More cable carriage problems - rudruff - 07-25-2013

I had the channel and did enjoy it. Hoping for more live events next year when I will be able to get it again.

Re: More cable carriage problems - CompSci87 - 07-25-2013

I have the Stanford/Berzerkely channel in HD on Comcast in Palo Alto and have been quite happy with it. Didn't really notice the issues 71bear had. Though one of the women's hoops announcers is annoying. I also get the national feed, but only on standard def. Hmm, and the channel available to me on the Internet too with a Comcast login. IIRC all the regional feeds are there.

Is this just shorthand for talking about the Pac12 network that we get on comcast in Palo Alto, or is there an additional channel from Pac12 that covers only Stanford and Berzerkely?  If I get more than one Pac12 channel I have not found it....

As noted by CS87, Comcast offers the UC/LSJU channel in HD and the national channel in non-HD.

The Pac-12 network consists of one national feed and six regional feeds: Arizona, Bay Area, Los Angeles, Mountain, Oregon, and Washington. Much of the time, all the feeds carry the same thing, but occasionally, and perhaps more often in the future, a regional feed will carry a game of interest in that region while the national feed and/or other regional feeds are carrying something else.

On Comcast in the Bay Area, the available channels are:

433 Pac-12 Bay Area in standard def
434 Pac-12 National in standard def
823 Pac-12 Bay Area in high def

Maybe you are only aware of 823?

If you ever want to see something from one of the other feeds, you can watch them all on your computer at http://xfinitytv.comcast.net/specials/Pac-12. (Sadly for me, this requires a recent version of Microsoft Silverlight, so I can't watch it on my Linux box except by firing up a Windows virtual machine.)

DirecTV also refuses to carry the regional sports channel that broadcast the Astros and the Rockets for the fine folks in Houston.  Houston is a very big TV market, and outside of the NFL those are THE pro teams in town.

You all can guess the DirecTV quotables.  Too expensive, most customers don't watch those teams, etc.

http://blog.chron.com/sportsupdate/2012/11/csn-houston-stalemate-continues-directv-ceo-bashes-high-rsn-fee-requests/

DirecTV is very vocal that going forward they will carry fewer of these expensive RSNs that appeal to very small sections of their customer base.  They note the ratings and share for the channels, etc.  The Pac-12 network is our issue, but DirecTV has clearly decided to move away from carrying all of the regionally focused sports channels.

Look, I love HGTV, but I am not going to pay for a TV subscription if it lacks sports.  I am even willing to pay my share of the costs for others to watch their sports.  It is apparent DirecTV wants to move the business model a different direction and will use the newer RSNs to make their case.

I have always believed they will cave in on the SEC channel, but the others RSNs are mere pawns in DirecTVs grand plan.  Those that stay with DirecTV while simultaneous blogging about their favorite RSNs inability to get on DirecTV are exactly where DirecTV wants them.  Still staying and  still paying.

So .....  do we have any Dish customers on the Cardboard?  How's the main alternative?

Re: More cable carriage problems - yvonne - 07-27-2013

It may not be the best alternative for people who may not be living in the same place for two years or longer. The deals which offer a one-year discount require a two year contract. Otherwise, you will need to purchase your equipment, and sign a month-to-month contract. Which costs $20 more per month than a similar DirecTV package. I'm looking into AT&T uverse as another alternative I can package my Internet service.

Re: More cable carriage problems - CompSci87 - 07-27-2013

Did uverse pick up Pac12 yet? Heard they were going to but not sure it was confirmed. I switched from them to Comcast last year and got much faster internet service as well as Pac12 net.

Re: More cable carriage problems - Greyhound - 07-27-2013

I've had Dish for the last five years and am quite happy with the pricing, service, quality, and selection. The sports package is affordable (around $8/month) and includes everything I need to watch a wide variety of Stanford sports. As an added bonus, I get the NFL Network, NFL Redzone, the ESPN college football equivalent of NFL Redzone, and all the other regional sports networks.

Re: More cable carriage problems - rudruff - 07-27-2013

I think DirecTV has decided that owning the NFL package gives them enough of the sports based broadcasting to not bother with other channels unless they get preferred pricing.

It will be interesting to see what the SEC network gets. It has similar regional issues, and the best match ups are still going to be on CBS.

Garvin nailed it.  Here is a terrific article on the subject.
