"Skov raving about Alex Carter. "Never seen anything like" his skill set as a CB. #gostanford"
"Asked David Yankey for WR breakout candidate. Without hesitation: Michael Rector. #gostanford"
"Shaw on Kelsey Young: there's the x receiver, the z receiver, and the Kelsey Young position. He's his own designation. #gostanford"
"Shaw on Hogan: there's 100% of the playbook and there's the Andrew Luck annex. He's getting close to the 100%. #gostanford"

Been a pretty consistent theme, re: Barry J. for Shaw. Guessing it's coachese for "GET BETTER PASS BLOCKING OR ELSE YOU WILL HAVE KEVIN HOGAN'S BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS, WHICH WOULD MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO GET A GRASP, MAKING YOUR PITIFUL PASS BLACKING EVEN MORE PITEOUS."
Anyway, a couple other notes.
"Shaw on QB Kevin Hogan: "We want to see how much he can handle. We're going to overload him in training camp."

The latter point has the sweet, sweet sound of preseason exaggeration.

Let's compare Watt and Anderson...
I remember first noticing J.J. Watt in a bowl game Wisconsin played against Miami, IIRC, in his Sophomore season. His size and athleticism stood out. Then as a Junior he blew up, had a monster year and became a first round NFL pick as an early entrant.
Though I first saw Henry Anderson play as a RS Frosh, much like Watt, he didn't really get on my radar screen as a difference-maker type player until his Sophomore year, which was pretty darn impressive. My guess is Anderson would have put up even bigger numbers in his Sophomore campaign if he didn't have a backup as good as Josh Mauro. Who can forget how awesome Mauro was in the Rose Bowl, for example?
It sure seems to me Anderson is poised to have a tremendous year. He doesn't play the same position Watt did in college (Watt a 4-3 DT and Anderson a 3-4 DE), but if Shaw said "compares favorably to J.J. Watt," I think he's pretty on the mark, based on what I know of the two guys at similar junctions of their college careers at least.

Anderson is highly productive, but Watt is a freak*. That's the main source of my amusement.Â
* See his insane combine numbers:

Pac-12 has an official podcast with Rick Neuheisel (and some Pac-12 guy):

Shaw/Skov is the second in line (around 14:20 or so), but the preceding interview with the Oregon State guys is fun as well.

I am almost positive Watt played DE at Wisconsin

Yes, well, his official position is DE but he also lines up at DT a lot too. Come to think of it, so too does Anderson. Anderson may or may not be as explosive as Watt, but he certainly compares favorably to him for several reasons.

Watt was selected 11th overall.
Do I think Henry Anderson will be picked that high? No.
But I think he's going to be a first-round pick. If there's exaggeration, it's not by much.
Re: linked media day audio: always respected and liked Mike Riley - Redrum - 07-28-2013
Interview w/ him played before the Stanford bit. Would have spared us the awfulness of Buddy and Wlat, but would have cost us the fun of Harbaugh and Shaw. I had completely blanked on the fact they won 9 games last season...AND beat Wisconsin.Â
I had to respect Shaw for taking the high road responding to the question about the SEC domination of the rankings at the end of the season. He said (paraphrased) the SEC had earned it by winning the games they had to win and it was Stanford's and the Pac-12s burden to win the games that count. No excuses.
Shaw on "The Kelsey Young position" - Redrum - 07-29-2013
Talk about complimenting and discouraging in one tweet. Basically Shaw is saying: " Get used to 5 plays per game, Kelsey. As a receiver, Ty Montgomery will play ahead of you. So will Rector and Owusu. As a runner, Gaffney and Wilk will get almost all the carries."Â

Fact #1:Â Had Stanford beat Notre Dame (and all others but Washington), Stanford would have played Alabama in BCS CG.
Fact #2: No way the BCS would have allowed a Stanford - Notre Dame rematch if Stanford had beat UW and lost to Notre Dame.
If fact #2 played out, Shaw would have had a lot of room for griping because it would have essentially been the 2011 season all over again (one team losing in OT but getting a championship re-match), with Stanford's only loss being in OT to the #1 team, on the road.

Strong statement from Shaw*:
Quote:"Whitfield has a chance to be a special receiver," Shaw said. "Michael Rector showed some great things in spring. Kelsey Young gives us some different dimensions. This is the best group of receivers we've had in three years when we had four guys who are playing in the NFL right now."
If true, I would feel very good about the upcoming season.
* (Yes, Shaw appears to be particularly prone to exaggeration, even relative to an already exaggeration-prone profession. Still, you can tell a lot given the relative weighting of his statements; in addition, you can often read between the lines and figure out what he doesn't like. For example the should've-been-infamous "We've got a chance to be solid" statement on the wideouts in 2011.)

I remain surprised that Josh has not locked up a starting role. Of course we'll have to see what happens on the field as season progresses.Â

based on Shaw's comments post-season and in/around spring practice, I don't think Garnett not starting is a surprise. hopefully the light will turn on and stay on for Garnett.
