A new SI cover - pincemob - 07-28-2013

Maybe it is just a regional cover but Richard Sherman is on the cover this week as "The NFL's most valuable player".  Not that long ago I believe there was a discussion of which players we've had grace the cover.  Well, add Mr. Sherman to that list.  Who would have guessed that 5 years ago.

The article itself paints a relatively nice picture of Richard, focusing on his days growing up in Compton.  One story I had not heard was that in the high school state semi he apparently locked down Nate Carroll (son of Pete) all game while Carroll screamed for P.I. the whole time from the sideline.  My favorite quote is from his mother, whom Richard consulted in 2008 coming off the knee injury and considering transferring.  "You're going to leave Stanford for some rinky-dink school just because you want to play football and don't get along with some coach (Harbaugh)?"  Beverly asked, incredulous.  No.  You go and make it happen."  The article also focuses on his Dad who to this day goes to work at 4am, and who coached him when he was younger.  Sounds like he had great parents.

The article states that after the call with Mom that Sherman texted Harbaugh and requested the switch to DB, which was granted.  It sounded like he and Harbaugh never really mended their fences but Ron Lynn saw his potential and worked him nicely into his scheme at the time.  All in all a good article.

From the cover on the internet it says "most voluble player"

Re: A new SI cover - SamAtoms1980 - 07-28-2013

Maybe a better cover word would have been "Most volatile player"?

Re: A new SI cover - pincemob - 07-28-2013

You're right, it is "voluble".  While I am not sure I'd agree with that, it is probably more accurate than valuable if we're talking the entire NFL.

Interesting.  I had assumed that Harbaugh made the switch due to position need against Sherman's wishes, and that was the primary cause for the rift in their relationship.

More detail on the switch.

It's a little sad to me that Sherman seems to go out of his way now to poke at Harbaugh. I suspect getting passed over by the 49ers (repeatedly) in the draft is a big factor in this little rift.
