Our Husky friend on that other site will be absolutely you-know-whatting bricks when he sees this, as the theme of his article is that Stanford in general and Shane Skov in particular are overhyped.

Re: Skov on Sports Illustrated cover - yvonne - 08-14-2013

His perspective seems to match those expressed by Husky fans on the previously anonymous ESPN Pac-12 blog. In a nutshell, Stanford defense is overhyped because Washington beat them. Of course, that's not exactly a position complimentary to Washington's offense.

That may be the proximate cause, but the underlying thing is that Husky fans have a lot of anxiety because they feel they should be top dogs in the Pac-12. Their tradition, their fanbase, their history is only second to SC... And with Oregon and now Stanford passing them, they've got some performance anxiety as to whether they'll ever get back. (I suspect Bill Walsh claiming they're just a bunch of mercenaries back in the day probably doesn't help.) So slamming Stanford is just a way of addressing their own insecurities as fans. (N.D. fans had similar tone/outlook/approach before 2012.)

Anyway, SI has some excerpts of the story on Skov and the cover story looks like a keeper: http://insidesportsillustrated.com/2013/08/14/revenge-of-the-nerd-shayne-skov/

Still my favorite smack talk against Husky fans.

"I really enjoyed Tyrone's time at Stanford, but as I grow older and meet more Husky fans, I am learning to appreciate his time at UW even more."

Re: Skov on Sports Illustrated cover - GoodGrief - 08-14-2013

Wow, I liked this passage. What a testament to the power of a good school & teachers.

[Skov] eventually landed at Trinity-Pawling, a prep school in upstate New York after being kicked off the Piedmont High team for missing the team bus to a big game. Shayne thrived in the structure and stability of the prep school where he loaded up on AP courses, scored a 1,300 on the SAT and excelled on the football team. “That school was nothing short of a miracle,” his father Peter Skov says. “I sent my kid there as an act of desperation. He was on his way to a construction job, and they turned him into a Stanford student. Are you kidding me?” Says Shayne, “I can’t say enough about how much patience they had with me and steered me in the right direction.”

Since it is a regional cover, only fans in the west (below the Oregon/California border) will see it.  UDub fans in the Northwest will enjoy the cover with Mariotta in green and gold...

Re: Skov on Sports Illustrated cover - JohnR34231 - 08-14-2013

Just as some ND fans will never get over disliking Stanford because of the band incident, some Husky fans will never get over disliking Stanford because of Bill Walsh's comments.

Knickers in a twist about...Willingham of all people - Redrum - 08-14-2013

Sheeutt.  We didn't hire him in Seattle.  We didn't send him to Seattle.  This whole UDub Willingham resentment thing can be retranslated precisely :  "Who s*** in my pants?"

Re: Skov on Sports Illustrated cover - rudruff - 08-14-2013

As the Pac-12 network was starting up last year, they were showing a number of classic games.

One of the games they showed was the Stanford-UW game where Superman put on Marcus Tuiasosopo's uniform and won a shootout. I am sure this was going to be their pro-Husky game to show a lot. The problem was that there are a number of shots of our coach on the sidelines.

I don't know if they realize what a stomach punch each of those cut-aways was to UW fans.

"Tuiasosopo tucks it and runs for another 1st down. Stanford can't stop him today." (Husky fan reveling in the highlight.)

Quick shot of the guy who wrecks your program in a few years. (Emotional drive-by.)

"1st and 10 Washington. What is Willing.ham going to do to shut down the Husky attack?"

Here are a couple links just below which might be a little off topic for this thread, but somebody did bring up the point about envy / bitterness of the UW fan base (in light of recent UO and Stanford success, not to mention that of Oregon St).

Addicted to Quack is doing an individual Pac-12 team preview podcast and they just posted Stanford's (I haven't listened yet), http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-87503/TS-776059.mp3. For any extreme nerd who might tune in, the intro refers to a notorious play in the early '90s generally known (among OU people) as symbolic of the turning point in UW's and Oregon's programs. Here's a bit on that... http://www.kval.com/sports/local/65417682.html?tab=video&c=y.

Edit: podcast not worth listening to, not to say Jack Blanchat didn't do a good job answering questions

Re: Skov on Sports Illustrated cover - yvonne - 08-15-2013

and while we're on the topic of UW and coaches, we might as well add this video to the mix.

Is he standing in front of the Conibear docks?  Huh.

Re: Skov on Sports Illustrated cover - washingtonismoney - 08-16-2013

UW fans are mad: https://twitter.com/UWSBN/status/368453985687969792

This is 59er fan level of paranoia. Guess a decade of immiseration will do that.

Right, the only way to build muscle slowly over months is steroids.
