Ducks - JohnR34231 - 09-07-2013

Look pretty impressive against Virginia, although UVA is not getting totally run out of the stadium.

Score is 28-10 at halftime.

Tyner is scary

Re: Ducks - needle - 09-07-2013

I thought Mariotta looked pretty good passing the ball, all things considered. That scares me. While I completely buy into the heroic narrative of the Stanford defense against the Ducks last year, Mariotta did miss some passes. Any growth as a passer is a scary proposition.

However, I also thought maybe the play calling maybe wasn't quite as inspired (or at least as successful) as under Kelly. In particular, the Wahoos got a fourth-down stop at the end of the first half near the goal line. It's much more likely I don't know what I'm talking about here.

The defensive line looked really good to me. Armstead is scary. Secondary very good. LBs? Maybe not so great.

Overall, their offense is probably going to be as good as last year, but this Duck team may be a bit more vulnerable defensively than last year. We'll see.

Oregon being able to keep Thomas at receiver because of the emergence of Tyner scares me. Because that's what I think will make Mariota's an even more dangerous passer

That is scary. Oregon speed vs Stanford power is always fun to watch. I feel like have physical guys on defense who are fast enough to *almost* hang with the speed of Thomas and company. As long as they are in position I'm not worried about our DB's vs Thomas. I doubt his hands are on par with other Oregon WR's.

Huff is an amazing receiver. It will be fun to watch him vs our DB. As long as we contain him of course. It wasn't fun watching Blackmon.

Re: Ducks - fullmetal - 09-08-2013

Huff had 55 yds receiving against UVA.  (DAT had 3 TDs and a bucket of yards to compensate.)

One UO RB had more rushing attempts than DAT, and that was Byron Marshall, who had 31 yds on 15 carries.  DAT had 124 yds on 11 carries, 3 TDs.  Tyner had 51 yds and 2 TDs on 4 carries.  Sounds like three legit RBs to me, ugh.

I didn't watch the game, but 31 yards on 15 carries is not a good stat line, 2 ypc is actually really bad. So it sounds more like they have 2 legit RBs from those stats.

Re: Ducks - Rando - 09-08-2013

Marshall is being used as their balanced speed back, which is their main guy. Thomas is more the receiving HB and change of pace speed back & returner. Thomas makes more plays. Marshall probably blocks better.

Marshall really struggled, but running up the middle from shotgun only works when you have blazing speed or the defense assumes pass. Marshall probably is better than 2 YPC but he sure was having a hard time against Virginia. He was supposed to be the Barner type back. Good speed but balanced...and not as fragile.

Re: Ducks - Rando - 09-08-2013

Huff had the most amazing catch I've seen all season thus far. One that gives Andrew Lucks one hander a run for its money. Or the Fleener one hander.

Re: Ducks - fullmetal - 09-09-2013

Yes stupac, I can divide numbers just fine :)  If you look at Byron Marshall's stats from the Nichols State game the week prior, he had 124 yds and a TD on 8 carries.

Huff is still the top WR for Oregon, I think, though DAT can function as a receiver.  I have both of these guys on my college fantasy roster (sigh, had to).

Marshall is a decent running back, but why do I get the feeling he is just keeping the position warm until Tyner matures and gets more experience.

Re: Ducks - fullmetal - 09-09-2013

Because that is indeed the gameplan, I think.  Tyner will probably become co-backup by the end of the season if not the sole backup RB behind DAT.  You'll have DAT out as a receiver with Marshall/Tyner in the backfield at some point this season.  Their playmaking abilities are too good to not overwhelm opposing defenses.  (Huff, Lyerla, DAT receiving with Mariota, Tyner, and maybe Marshall as a fullback or a true fullback in there...)
