Kevin Hogan Stats - pcgoode - 09-30-2013

Some interesting and impressive stats regarding Hogan's performance this season to date from ESPN:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/516357/kevin-hogan

His yards per attempt, at 9.56, is substantially higher than his final 2012 number of 7.21.  Also improved are his quarterback ratings.  His completion percentage is down, but I will take the 63% he is making this year as long as he continues to make progress on his deep balls, which I think he is getting better at as the season progresses.

This is my favorite Hogan stat: 9-0

My 2nd favorite stat is his ESPN QBR 88.8, good enough for #6 in the country.  And he keeps getting better.

The concern this year with Hogan has been his turnovers. They've taken away roughly 13-17 points (if not more) from the team so far. (Army FG, no TD versus Army, no TD versus WSU). If he can keep on averaging 8+ YPA, it's a trade I'll make, but hopefully Hogan can have his cake and devour it too.

(The Hogan deep ball thing: Hogan deep throws come in two varieties. If Hogan can throw the ball on a line, he's probably going to make it. If it's a touch pass, it's very hit-or-miss and a bit frustrating. Note that the two INTs costing us roughly 10-14 points mentioned above were both attempted touch passes into the endzone. The good part is that the recognition was good: in each case the receiver was indeed open and needed a touch pass for the completion. The bad part is that they were laughably inaccurate. Again, something to improve upon.)

Yep, the interceptions have hurt. I hope Hogan can clean up those mistakes. Otherwise, he has played very well, I think.

No question about it. Hogan is much farther ahead than I thought he'd be. It's incredible: if you told me before the year that through four games our TEs and Kelsey Young were total nonfactors, I would've been anticipating the worst. Hogan's 9.5 YPA is awesome (but probably unsustainable...); moreover, he's been able to actually carry the offense. WSU isn't a blowout without Hogan applying some verve to procedures.

Still, there are things to improve upon and the number of turnovers is concerning.
