Is there a point here?

not cool.

That Fred Craig transferred to Penn after one year. It's hard to call him a bust. He was definitely undersized for a LB. A tweener twixt LB and safety. But he just never felt comfortable at Stanford as a school and chose to go where he did feel comfortable. Had decent career in the Ivy League.
Charlie Hopkins has had major reconstruction on his leg, twice-- in HS and again at Stanford IIRC. Hard luck, maybe, but hard to call him a "bust."
Makes me wonder if you ever took statistics and learned about the bell curve.

Plus Hopkins is now the starting TE.  Love the comments. Just talking to a friend how mean some get on that other board.Â

Nottingham never even played and got injured in his first game at Columbia. And Hopkins is now finally starting to play after missing his first 2 years. And there will always be busts just like 2 star players make it to the NFL, eg. Doug Baldwin, Griff Whalen, etc.

I'm pretty sure one of the recruiting hostesses from the '09 class was at least a 36D.

I agree that this is a mean topic.
What I would be more interested in is the upside on our recruiting. Billy Beane has done a fantastic job over the years in finding talent and outsmarting the competition knowing that he can't outspend them.  He's was going to be a Stanford man (for football and baseball no less), can we learn from his approach and make him a recruiting adviser?
What are the recruiting misses and how do we minimize them? Can we use more of a cybermetrics approach to figure out the Griff Whalen "two-stars?" I'm sure some of this is already going on, but how do you try to systematize our approach to recruiting given the small pool that we can draw from?  Who are the two stars that we pass on that turn into a Griff Whalen caliber player?

Unfortunately, statistics only really apply with a sufficiently large sample size and against somewhat equal competition.Â
Baseball is somewhat unique among team sports in that plays are made by individuals rather then teams. A individual players batting average is a product of his skill and the pitchers he faces. A wide receivers reception and yards total is a product of himself, his QB, his offensive system, his O-line (will the QB get enough time to throw?), and the DBs he faces. Furthermore, with only 10-12 games a year a lot is subject to natural variation. I'm not saying that statistics don't matter at all, but unfortunately in football the old paradigms of watching film and projecting potential, alongside measurables like size, speed, strength, etc. are really the best options we have.

IIRC, there were one or two Oklahoma State folks that had the down arrow smoking a couple of years ago...

A second for Cal88...that guy was a douche. Luckily we had Terry to fight his douchiness with statistics and facts.

Getting in an argument with Terry? Sounds like Cal88 brought a knife to a gun fight. I've never seen him, so I guess he has the sense not to come back. These trolls really shouldn't bring their .22 caliber minds to this .357 magnum board.

I have not seen anything here that approaches the norm on most boards. I think people here should be very grateful.
