Big opportunity for Andrus Peat - OutsiderFan - 10-19-2013

UCLA OLB Anthony Barr is one of the top prospects in the 2014 NFL draft.  Andrus Peat can make himself a top prospect in future NFL drafts and put himself in position to make millions by neutralizing Barr as a pass rusher today.  By the same token, Peat can also be downgraded, at least temporarily, if he struggles with Barr today.

How does the Cardboard feel Peat will do against Barr?

Well, though I wouldn't be shocked if they flip Barr and match him up with Fleming.

It is also an opportunity for Stanford to make a statement that all the pre-season hype was justified.

Hopefully, we will.

Peat absolutely dominated Anthony Barr today.  His pass protection was awesome.

They tried quite a few stunts but Peat and Yankey's communication was perfect. Hey, gents, want to do it again next year?

I think I saw him line up at TE for one play which resulted in a big gain on a run to the right.

Also notable that the only play all game that Barr got hyped up, when he took down Kelsey Young, was a questionable play call sending Peat downfield to block and counting on Barr to overpursue the initial handoff.

Our OL play today was generally very good.

I'm not sure how much this played into the coaches' thinking on that specific play, but the formation used on that play was  interesting. One of the successful moves used by UW (less by Utah?) was to walk down its OLBs to the edge and have them run blitz effectively against power. It looked like we lined up slightly unbalanced and ran a stretch play, which burned them a couple times. (Well, before UCLA stopped doing that.

Seems like an understatement considering how much time Hogan had in the pocket and Gaffney's career day on the ground (granted, Gaffney got a lot of that through his own efforts after contact.)

Is he eligible?  I checked and he played a couple games as a true frosh before getting injured.  Would he be eligible for a medical redshirt?  Either way, it's hard to see him passing up a first round draft projection.

Our offensive line was amazing today.  I used to think LB was the strength of our team but I think it might be our OL.  On some plays, Hogan had enough time to scan the field in every possible direction.  He could have made a pastrami sandwich with extra mayo on a few of the plays.

Yankey is a RS Junior

Re: Big opportunity for Andrus Peat - Hank 91 - 10-20-2013

I'm sure Yankey will be a first round pick, and I'm equally sure that Josh Garnett will step in next year and be a stud. As long as these guys are graduating -- I'm looking at you, Mr. Peat -- I think it's fine for them to leave a year of eligibility on the table. The of the impact when Shaw and his coaches to be able to sit in a living room and say to an offensive line recruit, "Look at our legacy. The NFL doesn't just look to us for tackles, but even guards. David DeCastro and David Yankey were first round picks." Then he turns to Mom and Dad and says, "And by the way, both of those guys have Stanford degrees hanging on their walls."

Re: Big opportunity for Andrus Peat - Hurlburt88 - 10-20-2013

I zeroed in on Garnett yesterday for one play in particular, and he absolutely took his assigned defender out of the play, a defensive end.  I really think the future is bright there!Â
