Some Random Thoughts for a Monday Morning - Extra Point - 10-21-2013

A few randoms for Monday morning:

A quote from Shaw in an article on Rivals, "He said Cajuste was back on the sideline in the final minutes and told him the knee no longer hurt."

The average odds for Saturday's game are currently Stanford -5.5.

The only team that Oregon State has played this year with a winning record is Eastern Washington.

No rain and mild temperatures are forecasted for the OSU game.

Still no official word on who will be the third out of conference game in 2014 or 2015.

No one else has said it, so I will – "BOWL ELIGIBLE" – it was not that long ago that this was a major milestone.

I thoroughly enjoyed the UCLA game, but I did not get much work done on Sunday.

Add:

It looks like the Pac-12 will have 9 teams in bowl games this year. From a post on another board:

Already bowl eligible...
Oregon 7-0 - remaining: UCLA, @Stanford, Utah, @Arizona, OSU
OSU 6-1 - remaining: Stanford, USC, @ASU, UW, @Oregon
Stanford 6-1- remaining: @OSU, Oregon, @USC, Cal, ND

Close to bowl eligible...
UCLA 5-1 - remaining: @Oregon, Colorado, @Arizona, UW, ASU, @USC
ASU 5-2 - remaining: @WSU, @Utah, OSU, @UCLA, Arizona
Arizona 4-2 - remaining: @Colorado, @Cal, UCLA, WSU, Oregon, @ASU
USC 4-3 - remaining: Utah, @OSU, @Cal, Stanford, @Colorado, UCLA
Utah 4-3 - remaining: @USC, ASU, @Oregon, @WSU, Colorado
UW 4-3 - remaining: Cal, Colorado, @UCLA, @OSU, WSU

Unlikely...
WSU 4-4 - remaining: ASU, @Arizona, Utah, @UW

Very unlikely...
Colorado 3-3 - remaining: Arizona, @UCLA, @UW, Cal, USC, @Utah
Cal 1-6 - remaining: @UW, Arizona, USC, @Colorado, @Stanford

FWIW, they did beat Utah at Utah.

Isn't ELGIBLE a town in the Libya?(nm) - Redrum - 10-21-2013

It is a major milestone on the way to Benghazi.

Re: Some Random Thoughts for a Monday Morning - Renaissance Man - 10-21-2013

Stanford favored by less vs. unranked OSU than #9 UCLA.  If Las Vegas controlled the polls, and took out adjustments for betting trends (some teams have more fans betting on them just because of the name on the jersey) we would have very accurate, unbiased rankings, and they would differ GREATLY from the current polls.

Yes, you are absolutely correct and this is exactly what I meant.

Every time I make a post on this board, I think about my 9th grade English teacher. She loved giving in-class writing assigments because she could walk around the room and slap kids on the head when she saw mistakes.

Re: OSU Point Spread

Las Vegas has figured out that Stanford plays low scoring games and rarely blows teams out. Still, I'll probably take the over when we do our picks later this week.

OSU is not that strong, but the game is in Corvallis.  Stanford has not looked great away from Stanford Stadium.  It will be an interesting game.  Usually the Stanford D wants to take away the run game and make the opponents 1 dimensional, but OSU rarely runs so they are already 1 dimensional.

Re: Some Random Thoughts for a Monday Morning - Leftcoast - 10-21-2013

Yup ... I like Stanford's D-Line when teams have a one dimensional, pass oriented offense.  To my mind, Reilly was much more dangerous when he paired his air attack to a strong, fast runner - think Jaquizz Rogers.  I'm less worried this year.  (Famous last words?)

A handy benefit of the now little-used pica pole.

The pica pole can also be used to break into a locked car by sliding it into the door panel from the window like a slim-jim.  Also, on the advice of counsel, I will not answer any questions about the way I learned this innovative use of old-school publishing tools.

Cheers,

That was Wazzu and not at their stadium.  OSU, at their actual home stadium, will be tougher.  Stanford did not look great at Utah or at Army.  Not saying it can't happen, just saying that from a Vegas perspective it is not clear that Stanford 2013 can win big in a true road game against a decent opponent.

Sure it does. The original contention was that the line seems small.  My response was that Stanford has not played great away from Stanford Stadium.  A win over Washington State in Seattle does not prove much to Vegas types, or me for that matter.

But add it in if you want.  Stanford has played 3 games away from Stanford Stadium.  In two of those games Stanford looked pretty bad actually.  In one, Stanford played like a mere top 30 team beating one of the worst teams in CFB.  Add those things together and Stanford has not looked great (collectively) away from Stanford.  Worse, in the one game that Stanford looked OK (definitely not great), Stanford was playing a bad team in a neutral venue.

Therefore, Stanford as a 6 point favorite against a good team at their real venue is fair.

The next upgrade of our software comes with a Virtual Kathy who materializes next to your computer at the first sign of a typo, misspelling or dangling modifier and does just that. The Webmistress is still trying to decide if we want to put up the bucks for the optional chainsaw accessory for cases of apostrophe abuse.

Mrs. Rogers liked to debase me in front of the class about my over use of commas. She called me the commatist.

Re: Some Random Thoughts for a Monday Morning - fullmetal - 10-22-2013

Stanford to cover.  I'm hoping the team crossed the inflection point this last weekend driving to score when UCLA knew the power was coming.  Cam Fleming's two-handed gesture to the sky said it all after the last Stanford touchdown.Â
