1982 Washington(1) at Stanford on Pac12 -
81alum - 10-22-2013
I just finished watching the 1982 Washington at Stanford game on the Pac 12 network, and see that it is scheduled to be broadcast again at 11:30pm Pacific.
Washington came into Stanford ranked #1, and John Elway, Vincent White, Mike Dotterer, Chris Dressel, Garin Veris and company beat them quite handily. There was an amazing 76 yard punt return for a TD by Vincent White.
Sadly, this was the high point of the year, our second to last victory, with the final victory coming 20-19 in the Big Game held at Berkeley. A few people inexplicably call the Washington game John Elway's final college victory--overlooking the win in the Big Game. I would, however, agree that the Washington game was one of our finest performances.

Those were frustrating times.
We were capable of playing very well, beating teams like Washington, Ohio State and Oklahoma, but when all was said and done we ended up with mediocre (or worse) records.

Watching that game reminded me of a different style of offense--one that definitely used the pass to set up the run. In this win Dotterer was well over 100 yards but a lot of them came on draws. A hefty number of receiving yards came on screens. We victimized a defense that was focused too much on the pass--and of course Elway's accurate bullets could destroy any zone defense even when they expected the pass. Consequently, nothing much worked for the heralded Washington defense.
I did see one trap play where our pulling lineman (maybe Chris Rose, who went on to a career with the Colts?) came around and absolutely pancaked the Washington linebacker. That was the closest to watching power I saw and was a thing of beauty. Despite this, we had a very effective running game without seeming to try.

What about the Ohio state game? Great 4th qtr and one of the most memorable TD passes in college history (Elway to Emile Harry).
If anyone has video of that TD PLEASE link it !!!!!

Interesting factoid for the boards Midwest natives and Ohio State fans. Stanford has an all-time winning record over Ohio State; in five games our record is 3-2.Â
For all the historic connection between the Big 10 and the Pac we don't play them much in the regular season. The last time we played the Buckeyes was the Elway game in 1982. Stanford also beat Ohio State in 1970 and in 1955. Several of our more mature fans will remember the Pasadena win in 1970 fondly.Â

This is an interesting site and the Stanford home page might be worth a bookmark just in case we ever lose Terry, our resident historian.

Actually 1971...just barely.

Whoops! Of course the Rose Bowl for the 1970 season was on Jan 1, 1971.  Beating Ohio State as a 20 pt dog was epic -I wish I could have seen that game and it's follow-up against Michigan in 1972.
We still have a chance at another pair of back-to-back Rose Bowl wins this year.

It was quite a serendipitous treat to chance upon the Pac 12 Classic replay of that game last evening. I had just seen several of the players a few days before at our class reunion. That game was one of my best Stanford Stadium memories as a student.Â
Man I had been waiting 30 years to see Vincent White's punt return again.Â
If you wondered what Mike Dotterer did in his football career to warrant selection for the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame, this game could be his resume. He was terrific.Â
Did you notice Stanford's kick returner/WR Kenny Williams? He is now Executive VP for the Chicago White Sox.Â
That was a brutally tough year in the Pac 10. UCLA, ASU and Washington would finish 5, 6 and 7 in the final rankings. Stanford had a shot at beating all 3 but only took down UW.

Thanks for reminding us 81alum. I loved that kind of offense that I mostly associate with Walsh's style developed somewhat by necessity. I wish we incorporated more of that kind of play today. In some respect, I think the spread employs some of the same tactics - short passing game to open up the run but also to open up big play shots. Walsh always was setting up the big play

I managed to catch this the other day. It was striking how similar the coverage was to what we see today. The announcer had an unusual accent and the graphics were clunky and primitive, but other than that little has changed in how college football games are covered between then and now. The shot of the fan in the crowd with the skull mask was a very modern touch.
