Cal fans barely care about Cal anymore. Cal has gotten to the point it is like a toddler taking on a 20 year old Mike Tyson, or a passed out woman everyone at a frat party takes turns on. Cal has far bigger issues than who is playing or not playing in games, or even coaching them.

OF, I think the reference to gang rape is unnecessary. And as a father of a college-aged daughter, pretty disturbing.

It's not a joke. It's a metaphor. I'm not laughing. Sorry if anyone was offended.

According to 59er Insider, Yikes called Goff the "long-term solution" (or something similar), which is not the language you want to hear out of a coach.

Apparently, quite a few CardBoarders were offended. Let's keep the metaphors on-topic.

I didn't even join this thread until after OF's post was removed, and I'm feeling a little queasy...

They covered the spread. That's a big improvement.
One might question a lot of things over there. If Goff is the future, maybe just maybe, he would be better off watching a few games from the sideline. It is not as if they are fighting for a bowl game or anything. Also, since their games are so out of hand and Dykes is merely playing for the future, I would think he would spend a bit more time getting QB #2 and #3 in for experience. This way if something happens NEXT year, their other QBs will have more experience.
In the end, I think Dykes will only be there until the end of the 2014 season after a 3-9 type season.

Nothing new to report...
The "problems" experienced last night are the same as we have seen all season. A porous OL, a feeble rushing attack (in part because of the porous OL), a true freshman at QB and a toothless defense.
The only solution is recruiting, recruiting, recruiting.Â
IMO, CoachDykes made the right move sticking with Goff. I was pleased to see CoachDykes' post game comments re: QB play for the balance of the season. I don't worry about players transferring. IMO, you play the guys who give you the best chance to win and not worry about the impact that decision may have on other players. Otherwise, you are short hanging the rest of the starters on the team.

Thing is, a lot of the buzz before the season indicated that the cupboard wasn't bare. Heard that from 59ers and Travis Haney, who regularly polls coaches, was saying his sources felt the same way. And of course Tosh and Teddy recruited quite well, at least according to recruiting rankings.
Now, apparently, there aren't enough armaments in the armory. Maybe that reflects poorly on the top 59er, maybe it doesn't, but it sure isn't a good sign.
Anyway, I hope recruiting isn't supposed to be the 59ers' salvation -- or that Yikes is a better evaluator and developer than top-end recruiter. C'al's 9th in the Pac-12 in 247's consensus ratings, and reportedly their top recruit -- Koa Farmer -- is intrigued by the idea of jumping ship.

I'll leave it for someone else to compare and contrast with MacIntyre. Check out this column after the Buffs loss to Zona.
Quote: "It hurts because this is a team we definitely thought we'd be able to beat," said senior defensive end Chidera Uzo-Diribe.
Previously, MacIntyre has done a terrific job of not belittling his holdovers and getting the most out of them. That's pragmatic for a coach, of course. But one way to buy time in this era of absurd salaries and correspondingly shorter fuses is to at least subtly trash everyone who was with the program before his hiring. And you can do it without coming out and saying it.
In that sense, he and another current Coach Mac Colorado State's Jim McElwain have taken similar high-road approaches.

Colorado DEFINITELY was not in a better position than UCB coming into 2013. This year they have played reasonably well and won OOC games. MacIntyre will have a turn around recruiting story, and his current players will be decent hosts since they have been treated well.
When Dykes recruits come to UCB which upperclassmen will serve as hosts to those players?
Dykes could turn it around, but he is not off to a good start. His offense is not nearly as dynamic as UW, WSU, UCLA, Oregon, or ASU. And the 2013 defense is at best at the 2012 LA Tech level. Goff seems to have a canon of an arm, but since the D is so weak opponents only need to stop Goff once or twice to begin pulling away.

What's happening to Dykes reminds me of what happened to RichRod when he was at Michigan: inheriting lots of talent that may not be suited to his system.

Well, that and the massive attrition and dumb, ill-fated defensive coordinator hire.
Actually, the offensive talent fit doesn't seem so bad -- I've been surprised that the 59ers haven't been able to do a bit better on offense. But then, no one made Yikes start a true freshman QB, even though history is fairly clear it's nearly always an awful idea.

The defense has actually gotten a little bit better over the year, but The OL is the issue, as 71Bear said. Just look at UCLA to see how being forced to play so many Frosh OL does not a great offense make. UCLA went from being one of the better offenses in the country to being held to an average of 12 PPG in its last two contests. And the reality is, even when they played Cal for the first time playing two True Frosh, they weren't great.Â
UCLA's young OL are much more physically talented than Cal's. Cal started two True Frosh who had never played on the left side against Washington, had a Soph playing Center who moved from LG for the first time ever, a first time Junior starter at RG, and a RS Frosh at RT. Of course they struggled.Â
I don't have a problem with a True Frosh QB in such a simple to learn offensive system. Goff would look a lot better if he had a running game and wasn't under pressure virtually every time he goes back to pass.
