Jonathan Martin reportedly walks out on Dolphins, seeks counseling - fullmetal - 10-30-2013

Not the best of news.  Hang in there, Moose.

Quote:Dolphins coach Joe Philbin would not comment on Martin when asked about the lineman’s absence this week. If Martin does indeed sit out Thursday night, Tyson Clabo likely would rejoin the starting lineup.

However, that’s a secondary concern to the well-being of Martin — an unidentified Dolphins player told Darlington that Martin had an “emotional breakdown”.

It's sort of referenced in the article, but a friend of mine said that a teammate joking said that Martin couldn't sit at that table at lunch, at which point he threw down his tray and stormed off and hasn't been seen since. Around the time of the draft I was hearing rumors that he dropped as far as he did because of his temper, I guess that and frustration at the difficulties he has had in the NFL is a bad combination.

We can only hope things turn around for him.

Doesn't sound remotely prankish, though one could take that to the level of a prank.  Sigh.  Guess he's not finding much social support from his team.

Saw a little of Martin play this weekend vs. Patriots.  He seemed to really struggle with the speed of Ninkovich, but Miami's other OL weren't great either.  Only saw parts of the second half, but honestly, it appeared the Patriots coached circles around the Dolphins in that game (even though Miami at one time led 17-0), routinely confusing Dolphins blocking schemes, and at times leaving Patriots pass rushers completely unblocked.  Not knowing the responsibilities of the Dolphins pass protectors it's tough to know if Martin was doing his job or if he was responsible for the free runners.  Either would be frustrating, but probably doesn't warrant throwing a tantrum and not showing up for work.

In any case, good to seek counseling.

I'm also not fond of the unidentified Dolphins player talking to the press. Martin deserves some privacy, I would argue.

I just heard on the NFL halftime report during the Fish-Bengals game that Martin was invited to sit down with the veterans for lunch at the cafeteria.

When he sat down they all got up and left.

Seems pretty childish if true, and not what I would consider a good team atmosphere.

Here's a report: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/jonathan-martin-miami-dolphins-leaves-team-bullying-taunting-teammates-103113

I remember hearing some of the stories out of Hard Knocks sounded really extreme.

Maybe the team is leaking these stories to the press as cover for eventually trading or releasing him, shady if true.

I hope he ends up on a NFL team welcoming of nerds.  I'm thinking of one in the Midwest that wears white and blue where there are at least 7 players on the active rosters that read books (I'm giving the Boston College guys the benefit of the doubt here).

Thanks for finding and sharing. Man that's brutal. To be bullied by the guys you go to battle with for a year and a half would be a very lonely and terrible place to be. That is very dysfunctional and indicative of bad team leadership from the players, the coaches, and the management. Especially for Jonathan having been on the kind of team band of brothers at Stanford, particularly the OL.

I would hate to be there too. I hope another team is interested in him. He doesn't to put up with that kind shit. Life's too short.

As Garvin will tell you, the Dolphins are evil ...

Well the Dolphins won, so if it was Martin related the win should ease the media pressure.

Not sure I want the Dolphins to win, but the Bengals losing is good for the Colts.  So Yay!  Dolphins safety in OT to win has got to be a rather unique way to win a game.

Not only does he learn quickly, he applies it at a higher level.  Nice try, Fins vets.  Martin's quicker and better than y'all.

Hang in there Moose.  Better days are ahead.

It is too early to know what happened.  That said, bullying is one of the things that really gets my feathers riled up.  If Martin has been the subject of repeated bullying, the Dolphins need to take action now.  There is no place for that in any workplace, much less an NFL team built on cohesion and teamwork.

After watching half a dozen sailors throw away their careers over a bullying issue, I don't have a lot of tolerance for it either.

There certainly exists a culture of hazing in the NFL (there are enough stories written about it), but after the traditional rookie stuff, you certainly don't need to put up with it. Maybe a thorough media probe will humiliate the organization enough to put a stop to stuff like this.

Sounds like Miami has an ass-hole* problem:

Re: Jonathan Martin reportedly walks out on Dolphins, seeks counseling - Trevmiesterj - 11-03-2013

Veteran players intimidating rookies and younger players to pay for dinners, trips, etc.?  If this is true, it's crazy and doesn't speak highly of the Dolphins team atmosphere.

It looks like the NFLPA is getting involved as well.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9913324/sources-nflpa-eyes-miami-dolphins-richie-incognito-jonathan-martin-case

Based on his reputation, I find it very hard to believe Richie Incognito was ever a "model citizen".

What a bizarre story....has anybody ever heard of anything similar in the NFL?

Re: Jonathan Martin reportedly walks out on Dolphins, seeks counseling - Trevmiesterj - 11-03-2013

Here is more from the Miami Herald regarding the culture within the Dolphins organization.

Quote:"Everything tastes better when rookies pay for it," veteran defensive end Jared Odrick wrote on Twitter this weekend. "Yes, the bill would make you sick."
