Herbstreit: Harbaugh to Texas? - pincemob - 12-10-2013
He disclaimed his comment was based on "no inside information" but felt Harbaugh might be the guy for Texas. I could see him back in college but not at Texas.Â

I wouldn't discount this.......

Can't see why he'd leave the Niners at this point. They are doing well and will be in a brand new stadium next season.

Yeah, Harbaugh leaving the 49ers for Texas seems absolutely insane. What coach of a successful NFL team has ever gone back to college, outside of as a retirement gig? There's no upside here for Harbaugh, even speculating about it is moronic.

The story when he moved to the NFL was that Jim's family wanted to stay on the Peninsula where Harbaugh could work for the Niners without moving. The coach had followed in Walsh's footsteps and saw the Niners as a storied and prestigious club at the highest level of competition - none of this sounds like Texas.
On the 49ers side, I can't see the organization letting their coach go easily after wandering in the NFL's dessert for a proverbial generation. Harbaugh took them to a promised land that eluded Nolan, Singletary, Mariucci and every SF coach since Seifert.
Harbaugh is competitive and money is one way of keeping score among football men but this rumor seems far -fetched. It doesn't fit what we know of the man.

I can't think of a precedent. One aspect of the situation is probably unprecedented though: Texas being able to pay what a successful NFL coach makes.  The other things I would say are, a) Harbaugh is different, b) the Niners have a lot of knuckleheads on their team and he may be chafing at the lack of personnel control, and c) given how long his Dad coached in college he probably does not view college coaching as beneath human dignity like some would. Still, it is long odds and strange Herbstreit would just throw it out there like that. Â

I am starting to generally wonder about ESPN sources-it is almost like a fight at the bat rack to broadcast the rumor before it gets scooped.Â
However, as much as I have difficulty believing this is a possibility, Austin is an incredible place to live and anything is possible since Chris Petersen was hired out of Boise.

There are other successful current NFL coaches who're also actively engaging in potential college jobs.Â

Actually, I think during those years the 49ers
were the NFL's dessert.

I'm having trouble parsing this. I know of NFL coordinators going back to college (in fact during the last decade two different Patriots' coordinators have done it), but I don't know of any head coach who has, except to flee a clearly failing gig (Saban, Carroll).

Ouch ..... Never trust IPhone auto correct and fast fingers.
Although Harbaugh has certainly had his share of desserts while leading the Cardinal and the Niners out of the metaphorical desert, the question is whether his family would want to move to Texas where the desert aren't merely metaphorical.

It's not that Austin is a desert, but the heat does get to you if you're not ready for it. It is a football state, after all.
I don't think Harbaugh is considering Texas, but he would clean up the Big 12 easily if he coached the Longhorns.

Colin Cowherd has alluded to Harbaugh not being happy with the Niners. This was before any Texas speculation. I've just yet to see any meat put on this Harbaugh and Niners trouble bone.

No no no. Lane Kiffin is getting the Texas job.
In all seriousness, I'm worried that Texas is going to get a good coach especially if he's a good recruiter. Texas has been such a rich recruiting ground for us, and the school is very respectable academically.

The rumors were strong enough that Mark Purdy from the Merc covered them in today's paper - and dismissed them. It is noteworthy that Harbaugh did not sign an offered extension. I also liked the ship analogy.
Quote:There's also Harbaugh's history at every stop of his career. He is so competitive and driven that he tends to wear out everyone around him, including his bosses. I gained a real grasp of this two years ago when I interviewed Ky Snyder, who was Harbaugh's athletic director at the University of San Diego.
The USD program was Harbaugh's before he was named head coach at Stanford. And it was a typical Harbaugh tenure. He won 29 of the 35 games he coached at USD and claimed two Pioneer League championships. Before he arrived, the Toreros had posted losing records in six of the previous nine seasons.
"He leaves a large wake," Snyder said, descriptively. "But it's great being on the ship."
I knew exactly what he meant. Harbaugh can be relentless in pursuit of something he believes will help his team win, to the point of driving his bosses loopy.

The suddenness and intensity of the rumors suggests they're orchestrated. But by whom? Who gains?
Texas? (Mayyyybbeee, if they want to hurry up the thought process of some of their other offerees)
Saban? (Nope.)
Harbaugh? (Yup! Classic negotiating play.)
So my guess is that this is a simple primal scream for -- more money? more respect? more power? -- from the 49ers. Texas is nothing but Kansas with a better mascot.
