Predict the score: #4 Stanford @ U.S.C. -
Gauss - 11-13-2013
As some have said already, boy, was I happy to be wrong about my prediction of the Oregon game!
The Rose Bowl is now within reach, but we'll have to stop first a talented if thin U.S.C.
In the
overall standings,
Leftcoast is in the lead, followed by
CrazedZooChimp,
Griffin78, and
Kevin Gemmell.
Vegas expects us to win 25-21.
My prediction is that we win 24-14.
Their solid D-line does a good job of stopping the run, but Hogan is solid enough to take us 3 times to the end zone. I also think there'll be a party-in-the-backfield that will make Kessler's life pretty miserable.

Stanford 42 USC 18.
Gaffney runs 2/3 of the time and Sanders/Young run the other 1/3 so that USC is constantly getting punched up the middle or running ragged on the edges. We pass some to keep USC off-balance, and Hogan runs two great bootlegs on 3rd down. Montgomery returns one kickoff and one punt for touchdowns. Ed Reynolds gets a pick six. Skov does one of his patented, "Guess the exact moment that the ball is getting snapped and smash the QB." Troy Murphy singlehandedly squelches three USC 3rd downs with sacks.
So say we all.

Stanford 28
USC 17
Devon Cajuste's return to health leads to a return of the deep passing game. Running game struggles a bit in the first half, but a couple if deep completions to the WRs, and commitment to the run start to bear fruit in the second half, when we control, the clock and keep M. Lee off the field.
On D, the front seven shut down the running game, then put Kessler under constant pressure. I think Lee or Agholor get free for a big play or two in the first half, but as the offense extends the lead and controls the clock, the Trojans abandon the run, and the D turns up the heat on Kessler, resulting in at least one pick.
An 11 point win, but it feels like a lot more, given the second half dominance.

Stanford is one of the few teams in the country not intimidated by anything about USC - the Coliseum, the band, their players, the stupid horse, or the media's adulation for all things Trojan whenever they are above mediocre.
Not only that, Stanford feels so comfortable in the Coliseum that it seems more like a neutral site game than a road game given how many Stanford fans show up, and how confidently Stanford plays there. Honestly, Utah and Oregon State are tougher places to play, even though USC usually has a better team than the Beavers and Utes.

OJ Simpson's alma mater stays in the game until the 4th quarter. Their lack of depth becomes apparent as Jim Plunkett's alma mater scores through the air and the ground to put the game out of reach.

Quote:Sanders/Young run the other 1/3
Why do people still think Sanders or Young are suddenly going to start getting significant carries? If it hasn't happened yet, I don't see how anything will chance until Spring football. They only way I see S/Y getting 1/3 of the carries is if we only carry the ball 10 times and we run 3 fly sweeps with Young.
As for my prediction, put me down for 30-13 for the good guys. It will be 14-7 at the half.

Messieurs Gemmel and Mill are both playing it safe with their predictions
Quote:STANFORD at USC
Gemmell: This one is dicey simply because of the history between these two teams. I think Stanford wins because its defense will rattle USC's passing game and plug the run. USC's strength plays right into Stanford's strength. And I think Stanford's strength is stronger. The Cardinal have won four in a row in the series and have the maturity to put last week's Oregon win behind them. Stanford 28, USC 24.
Miller: Stanford is too veteran a team to allow complacency to creep into the locker room after a big win over Oregon. Yet, be forewarned, if the Cardinal doesn't bring its A-game to the Coliseum, they will get upset by the resurgent Trojans, who are going to play hungry in front of their biggest home crowd of the year. Stanford 20, USC 17.

David Shaw DOESN'T go for a two-point conversion after a punishing fourth quarter drive mostly on the ground featuring Tyler Gaffney that goes for a TD. Garvin asks "What's your deal?"
Ed. note: Board software modifies to "Southern Low APR U". Love it!!

27 to 10 Stanford wins. I don't see much that would make me think USC's offense is any better than when we played them last year, and there is no question in my that their QB is not as good. Stanford's offence is better with Hogan at QB than with Nunes, and Hogan usually does well when we have a big game - this one fits the bill.
#partyinthebackfield feasts on a depleted RB corps, an immobile and inexperienced QB, and a suspect OL. Cardinal wears down their 50 scholarship players and pulls away in the second half.

Wishful thinking baby. I forgot to put in my prediction for a Statue Of Liberty Play, a Fumblerooski, and a "Hey Coach, Wrong Ball!" play, but I also hope to see those.
Okay, maybe not the third one, but definitely the Statue of Liberty & Fumblerooski.

Stanford 24; U.SC 14
The large home crowd gives SC some initial energy that wears off quickly. Stanford's line play is dominate in the second half and Kessler throws two picks while under pressure.
Half a decade of Tr.ojan losses get recorded in the Stanford history book.

I thought my score would break me free from the pack, but it appears my prediction fits in the consensus range.
Stanford 34 - USC 17
Stanford 17, USC 14 at half. In the second half the sanctions' impact will become clear as Stanford runs at will.
