Gameday Signs -
dabigv13 - 11-16-2013
"Even Lennay Kekua Got Into Stanford" got a chuckle out of me. "SPORTS" is the sort of sign you'd see at a Stanford Gameday (see what I'm saying about the way USC is changing?). Good to see the WSU flags...a sign of stability in the turbulent times we live in.

SC's signs are awful. There's a "Pussy" sign referring to Jonathan Martin, a "Stanford supports Obamacare" which is a non-sequitur at best, and so on and so forth.* Nothing about SC's performance today dissuades me from the view that it's the home of tools and ass-holes.
* I'm not sure whether "you can't spell S-K-O-V without DUI" is either epically dumb or just somewhat stupid, for example.
Re: Gameday Signs - pincemob - 11-16-2013
Quite a bit of this episode has made me ill. The fact that they picked among their "signs of the day" a "9 out of 10 girls in California are hot and the 10th one goes to Stanford" kind of says it all. The hosts really liked that one. Allowing the stupid Skov sign in the background of his family story was also uncool. And of course there is the gross Martin sign. Â
I think I read that this is our 8th Gameday appearance in 3 years and only 1 was at Stanford. I am no statistician, but the odds of that being a coincidence are damn small. I think it proves that ESPN wants to do everything it can to give infomercials to our opponents. Putting Ed Orgeron on stage for 15 minutes talking about all of his new player perks, the In-n-Out burger, etc. Give me a freaking break. Where was that free advertising when Harbaugh was rebuilding Stanford.Â

Corso picks SC. He's unbeaten picking SC games (whether for or against), so Nerd Nation can make some history today.

And Corso picks SC. He's never been wrong when picking an SC game, but I think this is the game that changes. I think Stanford wins it big.
More Game Day signs - Redrum - 11-16-2013
Just an opening note: It was just plain hard to read a majority of the signs. You'd think that smart college kids could figure out that yellow doesn't show up worth **** on a white background. So they do up their clever signs with red first letters and yellow/gold following letters. And in the glare of the rising sun, the sign: Â
Our Average SAT Scores
Are Better Than Stanford's !!  (Shows up on camera as):
OÂ Â AÂ SÂ S
AÂ BÂ TÂ S!!
Some readable signs:
Hire Ki.ffin!
Jonathan Martin whines more than Taylor Swift
Kevin Hogan wears Size 7 Shoes
Skov Eats Luna Bars
Kevin Hogan Drinks Appletinis
and the "High Concept Award of the Weekend" goes to a sign with near indecipherable vertical layout
Paper   Tr.ojans
Covers  Cover
Rock    Wood

Really? That's the best they could do? Those are all the dumbest signs I've ever seen. They must have hired the village idiots to make them. Only confirms my impression that there's not a clever mind on that entire campus. How did you stand it for four years, dabigv?
The signs show a certain cultural background - Redrum - 11-16-2013
Doesn't "Skov Eats Luna Bars" or "Kevin Hogan Drinks Appletinis" just scream authorship by privileged kids?  I just mention this because that cultural stereotype is the same stick used to beat on Stanford for ages now.

My cousin is juuuust past his mid-20s and doing extremely well. He runs marketing for a very hot startup in SF, he's a very smart guy who graduated from Reed College.
He spent his freshman year at USC. Understatement of the year that he despised it. I asked for an example, and here's the one he gave, from his perspective as a writer for the student newspaper:
"One of the sororities thought that they would do something socially useful, and selected as the focus of their charitable efforts the scandal of child labor in southeast Asia. And to raise funds, they decided to host...a fashion show. Probably using clothing assembled and sewn by those very same children. Not a hint of irony anywhere in the sorority..."

Was there a...

There were at least one or two other far less tasteful signs there...keepin' it classy, U$C.
Corso must not have watched that Oregon game. I don't think his prediction holds true today.

I think it was an attempt to call them feminine. So it seems more indicative of frat-boy bro "culture" to me.

Smart college kids can easily figure that out. But remember that we're talking about USC students here. ;)

I thought it was funny that Herbstreit essentially stabbed Corso! Cut him up so much that he was bleeding as they went to the tOSU vs Illinois game. Probably would have been safer to take Stanford, in this case literally.

Quote:I think it means you can draw a bigger, more frenzied crowd on most campuses.
I used to believe that. However, I did not think this crowd was more frenzied than the one in Palo Alto. It also did not have that innocent brand of college enthusiasm which I think is part of the Gameday brand (or should be).  Over the years there have been many sets which were less frenzied than our crowd, and don't forget the Palm Drive background was visually stunning. Anyway, all that is to say I don't buy that excuse any more. Especially not after the North Dakota State fiasco.Â
Re: Gameday Signs -
washingtonismoney - 11-16-2013
This year we were the victim of unfortunate timing. Stanford-Oregon would've been a strong contender, but (whoops!) we were on Thursday. The UCLA game came up against the FSU/Clemson showdown, and we'd just lost to Utah, dimming our luster. Stanford/UW vs OSU/NW was a toss-up at the time and you know the NW alums in ESPN were lobbying hard for it. The really questionable one was NDSU over Stanford/ASU.
Re: Gameday Signs -
rudruff - 11-16-2013
Take the signs as a badge of honor. They wouldn't have bothered if they had won the last three times they played Stanford.

He has also been wrong every time he has picked or not picked Stanford when the game is played at the game day site.
I find it interesting that ESPN generally has one or more of their senile experts make the picks that contradict the majority. Today we got two of them because Holtz is always happy to take a swipe at Stanford. He is still mad about Walsh calling him a cry baby.

An imaginary dead person got into Stanford but the $C bozos who made that sign didn't.

I can see a Telegraph Avenue street corner from my window! So I guess it fits. (Though I wasn't spouting any conspiracy theories.)
