Stanford AP #10, USA Today #12 - Farm93 - 11-17-2013

That's not bad!

More than possible with the games remaining for Stanford to finish #7 in the AP in December and move up to the top 5 after the bowl games since at home, and hopefully at all neutral venues, Stanford often looks like the best team in CFB.

I doubt that many voters will be paying attention to our bowl game.

Stanford can still make a BCS game. If not, all voters pay attention to the scores.  You don't have to drink the kool-aid, but you don't have to be pessimistic either.

BCS #9 - Farm93 - 11-17-2013

BCS #9 with the computers placing Stanford at #8.  Not bad.

Stanford can get back up to BCS #6 or so when the bowls make their picks.  And at those levels a BCS bowl might actually elect to voluntarily pick Stanford.  At a minimum, Stanford will be in the BCS at-large conversation for the balance of the year.  And since UCLA has a terrible reputation for out of state travel winning out should enable the Alamo Bowl to be Stanford's likely destination if the at-large thing falls through.

Yes, I am assuming that UCLA with Jack will beat ASU and USC, but then lose to Oregon.

Moving up will be tough but up to 7 or 8 is a possibility. Let's take a look at the teams around us in the BCS rankings.

Team  Remaining Games  BCS  Computers  Coaches  Harris  My Projected Finish
Auburn (10-1)  Bye Week, Alabama    6    3    7    7      7 (10-2)
Clemson (9-1)  Citadel, S. Carolina    7    6    6    7      6 (11-1)
Missouri (9-1)  Ole Miss, aTm, CCG    8    8 (tie)    8    8    11 (10-3) L to aTm and Bama
Stanford (8-2)  Ca.l, N.otre Dame    9    8 (tie)    12    11      8 (10-2)
Okie St. (9-1)  Baylor, Oklahoma    10    14    9    9      9 (10-2) L to Baylor
S. Carolina (8-2)  Coastal Carolina, Clemson    11    10    11    11    15 (9-3)
Texas A&M (8-2)  LSU, Missouri    12    17    10    10    14 (9-3)  L to LSU
Michigan St. (9-1)  Northwesten, Minn., CCG    13    15    13    13    10 (11-2) L to Ohio St.

My hope for the remainder of the season is that we finish in the top 10 and win our bowl game.

The BCS picture could look like this:

National Title: Bama - FSU
Rose: Oregon - Ohio State
Orange (1st pick): Clemson vs UCF (Automatic AQ Bid)
Sugar (2nd pick): Auburn vs. Stanford or Okie. St or Mich. St
Fiesta (3rd pick): Baylor vs. Fresno St. (Ranked in top16 and automatic non-AQ bid)

If we do not get the Sugar Bowl bid, then I am pretty sure the Alamo bowl will take us where we would probably play Texas or Oklahoma.

Yeah I would love to payback Oklahoma in a bowl game

Re: Stanford AP #10, USA Today #12 - OutsiderFan - 11-18-2013

Honestly, none of those post-season options are terrible.  Even if it is the Alamo bowl, the program still gets to take on a traditional power.

Nothing would be better than Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, but wouldn't Texas A&M or Missouri be a possibility as an SEC rep?

Frankly, it's long overdue for the PAC-12 and SEC to meet in the post season.  I don't think that's happened in decades.  Last one I can recall was Stanford beating Georgia in the 1978 Blue Bonnet Bowl.

Re: Stanford AP #10, USA Today #12 - FarmBoy - 11-18-2013

Is this where Larry Scott and Bernard Muir make justify their lofty paychecks? Are they working in the background with the Sugar, Orange and Fiesta Bowls to make sure Stanford football's value proposition is well understood to the selection committees?

I find it odd that when people were projecting Stanford to lose to Oregon and then win out, they were still placing Stanford in a BCS Bowl (even when they thought Oregon was Rose Bowl bound). We have just as many losses and a higher quality win in beating Oregon, and yet we're now off the table?

Let's hope for a strong finish by the boys in red (I hope they don't feel as deflated as I do) as well as some chaos at the top.

Alamo Bowl would be nice.  Plane ticket prices to Phoenix or LA around New Year's are approaching unpalatable in a sour grapes kind of way :p

Re: Stanford AP #10, USA Today #12 - Hey - 11-18-2013

Hopefully this isn't a concern for Stanford this season, but I had an interesting conversation in 2008 with someone who works closely with Qualcomm and Petco stadiums in San Diego.  This person said that Stanford would never play in the Holiday Bowl because of the band.  I'd love to see that come up in a press conference, "...excuse me, why isn't the Stanford football team allowed to play in the Holiday Bowl?"

If 'Bama wins the SEC CG and goes to the NCG, I think the Sugar Bowl would probably have the SEC East champ — either Missouri or South Carolina. Auburn plays in the SEC West, same as Alabama, so if Auburn loses the Iron Bowl it doesn't get a shot at the SEC championship.

Doesn't really matter which SEC team the Sugar Bowl selects.  They will select one, but they can only take one.  It is not really important to us, or the Pac-12, which team they take.

FWIW - I think they would take Auburn over the SEC East because the SEC West is tougher, the teams travel to New Orleans in bigger numbers, but it does not really matter much.  They are interchangeable to me.  If we are left wondering which SEC team would be best for Stanford, I will be happy with that problem.

They'll take A&M if they're eligible because MANZIEL.

Well, it's important to me … and important for the prospect of Peace on Earth in my household during the holidays.  :)

That looks about right, although why would the Orange want UCF?  Ticket sales?  I would think they'd want to fill hotel rooms and go with OK State or MSU.

Didn't the Sugar select Ohio State over Stanford in 2011 (when we had the presumed #1 pick Andrew Luck?).  Something just tells me the Sugar Bowl committee is not a Stanford- oriented group. And who knows what T-boone Pickens is promising behind the scenes.  I think we were lucky when the 2011 Fiesta Bowl chairman was a Stanford grad.

Why are you expecting the Alamo Bowl to take us?  We could be up against either SC or UCLA for that game.  Have we ever won a bowl-joust with an LA school?  I recall 1995 when 4-4 UCLA got the Aloha bid and we at 5-3 got sent to Memphis.  It seems like the LA schools get favoritism because of their history and size.

I like the optimism here, but I am still thinking Las Vegas is more probable than BCS or Alamo, unless I misunderstand the selection rules which is possible. Maybe I am still reeling from the 2001 10-win team going to the Seattle Bowl.    I think ND is our bowl game now.

Re: Stanford AP #10, USA Today #12 - Farm93 - 11-18-2013

If Stanford wins out, sits at #7 or #8 and misses BCS at-large invites, then I think we have faith that Larry Scott will tell the Alamo Bowl to do the right thing.  Besides, the Alamo bowl wants to be a BCS type bowl, and taking a team in the top 10 with 3 previous BCS bowls would really help their story.

I can't imagine that the Alamo Bowl, the Holiday Bowl and the Sun Bowl would all collectively skip a chance for a BCS top 10 team.  It is not as if the other Pac-12 teams really travel that well.  If Stanford is up against a B1G, Big12 or SEC team that is one thing, but against other Pac-12 teams Stanford's profile and travel numbers are close enough.

Exactly.  After last week, I am going to focus all of my attention on worshiping the woofing gods, not angering them.  Because they just showed us that they can be cruel.
