Is it a given - yvonne - 10-17-2010

That Harbaugh and Luck will leave this year? TV commentators and fans of other teams seem to think so. Does Harbaugh\'s tenure hinge on Lucks?

Re: Is it a given - readarmy1976 - 10-17-2010

I think it\'s unlikely Harbaugh will leave this year. I mean, why would he? He\'s got the #12 football team in the country. I just don\'t see him leaving for another college job. He\'s already had all the glory as a player, he has plenty of money. He\'s not like other coaches who need to get the glory by getting the bigger job. The only college job I could see him leaving for would be Michigan, and I don\'t think it\'s a given that he even wants that job. Also, I don\'t think Rodriguez is going to get fired this year. Harbaugh has a good thing going, and I think he realizes that. He\'s getting lots of press. He\'s the man right now. I also think he wants to coach Stanford-type players.

I think it\'s possible luck will go to the NFL after this year, but I sense he genuinely feels a need to complete his degree, because of the dartmouth engineers in his german family, etc. i think he\'d feel a little ashamed to be the guy in his family without a degree. Odd, but true.

Re: Is it a given - Farm93 - 10-17-2010

I started watching the 49ers on TV.  They are not very good.  If the 49ers secure the 1st round draft pick, JH and Luck coiuld go to the same local pro team.

In any event, I would suspect that Luck is more likely to leave than JH.

I would put the odds of Luck leaving (if he stays healthy) at 90%, for JH maybe 30-50%.

However, the more Luck and the O look like cool calm winners, the better it is for JH.

I would be happy for Luck if he leaves and becomes the first QB in the draft.  And I would be happy for JH if he lands a good NFL job.

Both are more likely to happen if the team keeps winning, so what is the option really?  Hope the team starts losing?  Hope that Luck gets hurt?  That doesn\'t seem like a thing to cheer for.

Back to my Zen apparently...Enjoy 2010 for 2010.

Re: Is it a given - Farm93 - 10-17-2010

BTW for Luck there would be nothing stopping him from getting a degree later in life.  By 30 or so he would have a few hundred million dollars, and by 40 he will have ample free time.

Staying in school to get that degree is likely not the deal.  The deal would be that he could improve his chances of actually winning in the NFL with another year of Pac-10 experience.  He could also get hurt, so this degree and experience stuff must be considered against a meaningful risk of injury.

Re: Is it a given - Pastor - 10-17-2010

Both Luck and Harbaugh will be back next year.

Re: Is it a given - CrazedZooChimp - 10-17-2010

Isn\'t it a little early to start all this talk for this year?

Just keep praying for an NFL lockout/strike like I am.

Re: Is it a given - readarmy1976 - 10-17-2010

I saw him say that he feels he needs to get the degree in an interview when asked about leaving. He just threw away the possibility and was like, "No, I have to get a degree." Then I heard some rumor that his dad told tailgaters that Luck has to leave if he\'s a top 5 pick.

I think another incentive to stay has to be "college greatness". I mean, they would have a crack at the national title if he comes back. And, he\'ll have a real shot at the Voldemort too. I like to think he\'s coming back.

Re: Is it a given - fullmetal - 10-17-2010

If Luck is a top-5 pick, I would encourage him to leave.  I do think that would be the best decision for him given that he can always finish his degree later.  The publicity of Stanford having a top-5 pick would be pretty nice too, just as perhaps doing a little bit of preseason lobbying for Toby last year might have given him those 22 extra points needed to win the Voldemort...

If the OL can keep up their dominance next year (not a given due to the years of experience leaving the team), maybe Luck would want to win a national championship.  But in this age of football factory schools, that\'s not such an easy thing to forecast.

Some more tea leaves for ya\'ll - Redrum - 10-17-2010

A good read whether you think it proves he\'s leaving or staying.   I actually think the headline is a bit misleading.   More about his life as a coach, his beliefs and backgroundm  than evidence in the staying/going debate.

I liked the part about how Bill Walsh said he would just sit in on the interview and not ask questions... then ended up firing football questions at Harbaugh for 2 hours.

Re: Is it a given - Pastor - 10-17-2010

My advice for him would be to stay with good insurance.

1) His sister is at Stanford (on the volleyball team)
2) He\'s having fun in college and going back later will not capture that fun and experience...pros can wait a year or two
3) He is a good student and, I think, smart enough to want to have life post-football (remember John Frank?)
4) The mess that is the NFL now is a deterrent
5) I think, unlike Locker, he will only get better and he and JH have a mission...he still needs some work
6) He likely wants the Voldemort and that piece of Stanford history
7) who can give up bollards?  Co-Ho?  Mem chu for a quiet reflection?  Fleet Street?  OK, I guess it would be easy to give up Fleet Street.
8) and finally, he would lose contact with US!

The insurance would not cover the bounty given to the #1 overall pick.

The list is great, but all it will take is one missed RB block or one horsecollar tackle.  #2 and #4 are likely in play but one missed assignment could ruin #2 in a hurry.

#3 is not a concern.  He may not have a Stanford degree to open doors, but he would have $100 million.  $100 million opens a lot more doors than a Stanford degree.  And no one would say he is not a smart guy because he left school early.  If he is smart, he is smart.

I am sure JH, Luck and his family have an agreement.  Forget about Luck\'s NFL options until the season is over.  Once the season is over they will get on the phone and assess the options.

Since Luck is a Redshirt Sophomore he must answer that he has no plans to go to the NFL at this time.  And if I am right that would be a true statement.  He will assess his options after the season is over.

Re: Is it a given - fyao - 10-17-2010

I don\'t think either is a given, but there is a reasonable probability of either or both happening.  With JH, it really depends what opportunities open up and there isn\'t any way we can control that.

I do wonder why JH hasn\'t been able to recruit more higher-rated qb\'s, given Luck as a model.  Behind Luck it isn\'t pretty, which shouldn\'t be, given the success we have had.

Re: Is it a given - fullmetal - 10-17-2010

Who wants to sit on the bench behind Luck given all the talk about him returning for all four years?  The Tom Bradys of the NFL are few and far between.

Hey! our last Voldemort hopeful auditioned with Fleet Street!

How do you know...there are businesses that will insure anything (see Lloyd\'s of London as an example)

Re: Is it a given - washingtonismoney - 10-17-2010

Moreover, the bounty is about to decline rather precipitously. The owners want to decrease draft payouts and the players don\'t care to fight them on that point (seeing as that will increase the proportion of the pie given to them).

Re: Is it a given - needle - 10-18-2010

As the sfgate.com article points out, Harbaugh and his wife are expecting their second child together.

I think this could potentially be a reason to stay, if it\'s not a slam-dunk decision to chase after NFL dollars or a higher-profile college job.
