Wasting 35 seconds - OutsiderFan - 11-30-2013

Can anyone justify Shaw allowing 35 seconds to run off the clock after the Hogan sack on 1st and 10 from th ND side of the field?  I understand not using a timeout, but if the offense had moved just a bit faster, Stanford could have 3rd and 2 after the Gaffney run, with as much as 20 seconds left from the ND 35.  That's plenty of time to get in FG range.

The way Stanford plays so many close games, it doesn't seem too wise to waste so much time at the end of a half near midfield.

Shaw figured the odds of getting a first down, let alone in FG range were remote, so he tried to run the clock down to give ND little time to do anything.

Good explanations. The know-it-all Domer fan sitting behind me could not figure that out at all and ragged on Shaw no end for wasting time.

(Happily for me, though, he spent most of the game ragging on ND for not doing what he believed was the only correct thing in each situation. He also made a habit of calling out what Stanford's offense was going to do just before the snap -- usually incorrectly, and usually what we actually did was a success. So he was more amusing than annoying, on the whole.)
