Tired of the SEC -
OutsiderFan - 12-01-2013
So it looks like there could be as many as five SEC teams ranked in the Top 10 today, and that is pretty much how it will be heading into the post season.Â
This is absurd. How is it equitable to rank these teams on the same merits as teams playing nine conference games? Here's the SEC reality:
Alabama missed South Carolina and Missouri
Auburn missed South Carolina and Missouri
LSU missed South Carolina and Missouri
Missouri missed Alabama and LSU
South Carolina missed Alabama, LSU, and Auburn
Look how many losses these teams avoided by only playing eight conference games.Â
Stanford, by contrast, missed Arizona and Colorado, and played ASU, UCLA, and USC. What if Stanford had Colorado on the schedule instead of Utah, and played Idaho at home instead of at USC? Stanford would be undefeated and probably ranked #2 in the BCS rankings today.
Just food for thought.

The good news is that only two SEC teams can go to a BCS bowl. This will open the door for a couple of schools.

Not really, since UCF and NIU still eat up two bids that deserving teams could use.

Only one non AQ team is going to a BCS game. This is a good thing too, possibly for Stanford.

A three loss team is not going to play in a BCS bowl. Oregon would be the Pac-12 beneficiary of any such fallout, but frankly, I don't think a Pac-12 team will get in the mix.

Huh? Only one non-AQ team ever goes to a bowl game (though if two were ranked in the top 4 it would happen, but afaik that's never happened). Fresno State losing means nothing if NIU doesn't lose too.
And if Stanford loses there's no way we're going to a BCS bowl. We almost certainly won't be in the top 14, and even if we are we won't get picked for the one open spot.

SEC losses against SEC teams don't seem to count, so playing more SEC games wouldn't make that much of a difference.
Pac did good out of conference this year. The other conferences have to beat SEC badly enough in the post season for people to notice.Â

Consensus seems to be that the Fiesta Bowl will want Oregon if NIU loses in the MAC Championship. Otherwise, the at large teams appear to be pretty well set - Alabama, Clemson and the loser of the Big 10 championship game.

If MSU loses I don't think they'll be eligible. I don't think they'll move up at all this week (no one close to them lost, they won't benefit from the reshuffling of the top 10). At #11 they don't have a lot of spare room. If OSU wins running away, they could easily far fall enough to not be an option at all.
Obviously this discussion is all sort of pointless (especially think I think MSU is going to beat OSU), but I don't think anyone should take it for granted that MSU is in if they lose.

What if Ohio State and Auburn BOTH lose? That's not totally out of the question. Remember the SC game following the Oregon game? It's hard to get up for two big games in a row, and as everyone has already mentioned, Ohio State hasn't played a tough schedule.

If OSU loses then the winner of the SEC is in the game. Most people seem to be assuming that'll be Auburn, but vegas actually likes Mizzou. I think it'd be pretty awesome if Mizzou won the SEC two years after leaving the Big 12, you'd think that would break up some of the inane drivel about other schools not being able to survive the rigors of the SEC. Mizzou wasn't even a good Big 12 team!
