... and graciously hosted the Stanford Wrestling team BBQ at his home in Santa Cruz for many years (IIRC, the family's connection was via their son who had a roommate who wrestled -- now that's hospitality).  Sure hope NK will do the right thing for once!

Here is more detail on Newman's role in the Korean War that helps explain the actions of a paranoid (if not delusional) North Korea.  Newman trained guerrilla fighters during the conflict and made no secret of his continuing ties to his ex-comrades.

It's hard to understand why a man with this background would chance a trip to Pyongyang which lives to stir up the embers of a war it believes is still being fought.  Newman evidently was traveling with a Stanford professor, Bob Hamrdla.

Unfortunately, Hamrdla's not having the same or worse experience. If he were, I would have to recalibrate my thoughts on NK and send Dennis Rodman with my personal best wishes to Kim Jong Un . (Why, yes, I do in fact maintain a 44-year-old personal vendetta)
