I'm not sure what the "no comment necessary" implies - good for cal (and good for california taxpayers) that they have found a way to partially recoup some costs. At least the company has a connection to the school (3 of the founders are alums).

I was curious, so here are the other FBS schools with corporate branding in the stadium name (not including those that play at NFL stadiums):

Wake Forest - BB&T Field
UCF - Bright House Networks Stadium
Syracuse - Carrier Dome
Rutgers - High Point Solutions Stadium
Western Kentucky - Houchens Industries–L. T. Smith Stadium
Texas Tech - Jones AT&T Stadium
Arkansas State - Liberty Bank Stadium
Louisville - Papa John's Cardinal Stadium
Akron - InfoCision Stadium–Summa Field
Minnesota - TCF Bank Stadium

"Cal hired Premier Partnerships, a sports advisory firm, to secure the rights."

Of course it did.  The $18 million for 15 years equates to just over $1 million per season (everything over probably the cost of the firm), or about $150,000 per game if you consider Cal plays about 6.5 home games per season over the length of the deal.

And Cal gets to put a Bomb logo on its field too!  A Stanford fan couldn't have drawn up a more embarrassing logo that would actually get put on the CMS field.  Cal, as it usually does, did it to itself.

There isn't enough space here to illustrate how embarrassing this whole thing is, on so many levels.

How long before they start calling it Hobbit Field ...

"Kabam!" is embarassing enough.  From now on when we play Big Game at Kal, I hope the Stanford students shout "Kabam!" in unison every time we score a TD.

I believe they do. What's funny is how much mileage the Calfans get out of mocking Stanford's tendency to sell the naming rights to everything related to athletics. But last night the folks on BI were patting themselves on taking this step (this was before the company and amounts were announced and they had delusions of grandeur of a truly history rights naming program.)

A couple of questions I have:
- Is it such a smart idea to sell the naming rights for 15 years when your brand value is at an all time low? If the team is a national contender in 5 years, they're going to be kicking themselves that they sold the rights for 15 years
- Is Kabam even going to exist in 15 years? Seem pretty optimistic to me, given the high turnover of companies in the media space

It's Louis M. Foster Field.

Kabam?  Cattoused?  It sounds pretty much the same to me...

G1313 - As a relatively new poster, you are probably not aware of my antipathy towards UC's current AD.  Hence "no comment necessary".  Just more of the same as UC's image and traditions circle the drain.....

Foster Field - In 1995, a $10 million gift from Los Angeles insurance executive and 1935 Stanford graduate Louis W. Foster enabled further updates to the stadium, including widening the concourse, improving the restrooms, and replacing the remaining wooden seats. In honor of his gift, Stanford named the playing surface the Louis W. Foster Family Field at Stanford Stadium

Re: Welcome to Kabam Field at Memorial Stadium. - Farm93 - 12-05-2013

There is something odd and almost inappropriate about naming the stadium originally funded to honor Great War military service, and then to slap KABAM!, a maker of mythical war and battle type games, on the field.

Honoring military service to our country?  Forgetaboutit!  KABAM!

However, if $18 million was the best that UCB could get, then I am glad they sold to the highest bidder.  Anything to reduce that debt burden.  So KABAM! it is.

Can they brand the port-a-potties too.  Kabloosh!

Re: Welcome to Kabam Field at Memorial Stadium. - 71Bear - 12-05-2013

Yvonne - Can't hold my Alma Mater responsible for that turkey.  That was the brainstorm of the previous high command at HQ.  Hopefully, the new UC President will be a bit more thoughtful before making substantive image changes.

As memorable as Rocky and Bullwinkle were, Jay Ward's legacy should be Crusader Rabbit (and Rags the Tiger) - it was my favorite TV show when I was a youngin'...

At least they're not calling it People's Park.
