Pac-12 bowl lineup - g1313 - 12-08-2013

Another reminder that our bowl tie-ins are not very compelling from a national interest point of view, and is also not very satisfactory for settling "who is better" arguments.

1. Rose Bowl: Stanford vs Michigan State.

2. Alamo Bowl: Oregon vs Texas - Should be interesting, although it sucks for it to be a de-facto home game for the Longhorns. Texas is not an elite team this year so Oregon needs to put up a good showing if it wants to be seen as one.

3. Holiday Bowl: ASU vs Texas Tech - Ugh, the Pac-12 runner up (8-1 in conference) goes up against the #6 Big-12 team (4-5 in conference). Major downsides for Pac-12 reputation if ASU loses, not much upside with a win.

4. Sun Bowl: UCLA vs Virginia Tech - I think BCS #17 UCLA deserves better than this. Hopefully this will be a blowout similar to the Orange Bowl

5. Las Vegas Bowl: USC vs Fresno State.

6. Fight Hunger Bowl: Washington vs BYU

7. New Mexico Bowl: WSU vs Colorado State

8. V100 Bowl: Arizona vs Boston College - Battle of two of the best running backs in the country.

9. Hawaii Bowl: OSU vs Boise State

Re: Pac-12 bowl lineup - stupac2 - 12-08-2013

The Alamo and Holiday bowls aren't very interesting, but I think most of the rest are. VT has a fantastic defense, so they might be able to give UCLA a run for their money.

And yes, it would be nice if we had better tie-ins. But the bowls are almost all in the south/southeast so we get hosed. Blame geography.

If you want better bowl tie-ins, lobby for better zoning laws in the Bay Area and LA.

Re: Pac-12 bowl lineup - Farm93 - 12-08-2013

Bowls are not really the solution for our times.  Most of these bowl games will feature crowds much smaller than the two teams would have at their home stadiums.  The cities and towns could find other ways to promote their tourist spots and fill their hotels.  Oh well.

Hopefully someday this will get changed to a more equitable playoff structure.  Today the current bowl system really favors the teams from the South and the teams with fans willing to "vacation" there (see B1G).

For example, I have been to Shreveport in December.  THAT is not a vacation.  My loyalty to Stanford only goes so far.  I would rather donate $5000 to the AD than spend $2000 on a "vacation" to Shreveport.  BTW - Sorry UofA fans enjoy the Shreveport/Bossier City area.

Good reddit post here on bowl records in the BCS era (all bowls, not just BCS bowls): http://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/1sddyj/complete_bcs_era_bowl_winloss_breakdown_by_team/

Includes conference vs conference records: http://i.imgur.com/aIPPlzx.jpg

I knew that Pac-12 doesn't play SEC very often, but I was surprised that there has only been ONE bowl game between the conferences in 800+ bowl games (Auburn beat Oregon in 2011 NCG)

You don't have to wait long for a new bowl lineup.  The roster changes next year.

...vacation time and dollars in some pretty egregious spots, all in the name of my kids' volleyball; e.g., Atlanta, Dallas, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Reno in the summer, Sacramento, Rocklin, Fresno in the winter, Irvine/Anaheim year round.  On the other hand, multiple trips to Santa Barbara and San Deigo.  I used to complain about it (a little bit), until one of my baseball dad friends told me about their schedule (Bakersfield, Taft, etc.) which was enough for me.

But that's why these places have bowls...no one else would be interested in going there...ever.

You got it right about baseball. Thanks to my grandson's talent, my daughter-in-law got to spend her birthday weekend in... Manteca. She was thrilled.  ;)

Do they still have water slides there?

BTW, when my kids would play in Anaheim (2x annually), the club director forbade the entire team from entering Disneyland.  Too hard on the legs.

We do.  The locations of the bowls don't change much, but the ranking of the opponents does.  For example, I believe the Alamo goes from Big-12 #3 to Big-12 #2 (so hopefully #2 v #2) and the Holiday bowl will be a Big-10 opponent (listed as one of the Big10 #2, #3, or #4, maybe it rotates).  Still no SEC matchup, which is too bad, but they'll never choose to play in a bowl outside of their little corner of the country.  Best we could hope for would be a tie in with them in Texas or something, or us be willing to send a team to Florida every year (not gonna happen).

The much lamented Manteca water park was uprooted ten years ago for a housing subdivision.  :-(

And there - in a sentence - is the trouble with kids' sports today. Creeping fogeyism on my part, I'm sure, but really?

The bowl tie-ins are only slight upgrade, but the CFB playoff system should make a big difference in more marquee matchups.

Pac-12 Order Current Bowl New Bowl in 2014-2019
1 Rose: B1G #1 Rose: B1G #1
2 Alamo: Big 12 #3 Alamo: Big 12 #2
3 Holiday: Big 12 #5 Holiday: B1G
4 Sun: ACC #4 Fight Hunger: B1G
5 Las Vegas: MWC #1 Sun: ACC #3-6
6 Fight Hunger: BYU or ACC #9 Las Vegas: MWC #1
7 New Mexico: MWC #4 Buffalo Wild Wings: Big 12 #6

The Alamo Bowl upgrades one spot in the Big 12, Holiday and Sun switches from Big 12/ACC to B1G (the B1G no longer is guaranteeing selection spots, the conference will pick teams to create good matchups), #5 spot switches from MWC to ACC, and we add another Big-12 matchup in Wild Wings Bowl. There is also talk of adding a new Christmas Bowl in LA that would be a Pac-12/MWC matchup.

However, the really big deal is the changes related to the playoff system. The 4 team playoff gets all the attention, but the selection committee will also be picking 4 other major bowl games. Three of the six bowl options have conference tie-ins (Rose, Sugar, Orange), but three of them are mostly at-large. The number of at-large spots goes from 2 in the current BCS system to up to 5 in years when the Rose/Sugar are hosting the playoff. I think the net effect of this will be to have many more "matchups everyone wants to see".

I didn't realize the committee was picking those too. Either way the massive increase in at-large berths for the best teams will certainly be great for creating good football games. I think we got pretty lucky this year, even though some of these games might not be good, they're almost all at least somewhat interesting for some reason or another.
