Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - Bruce Wang - 12-09-2013

I have never seen a player college or pro anticipate snap counts as well as Skov.  That mohawk must act as an antennae that picks up telepathic signals from the center.

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - stupac2 - 12-09-2013

Every single time he does that I think he'll be offsides, and it seems like he never is. How many times has he been flagged for offsides or encroachment? Is there a way to look that up?

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - FarmBoy - 12-09-2013

The sack in the 2010 ND game was exceptional and the ND fans are still complaining it was off sides.

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - Leftcoast - 12-09-2013

Yup, the ND 2010 timed snap count is my Skov signature moment!  EVERYONE thought he was offsides until we saw it in replay.

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - burger - 12-09-2013

Fantastic play by Skov in a season full of great plays by him.

I'm actually surprised that more teams don't run this play as part of their regular goal line defense.  On the plus side, if your guy times it right, you have a high probability of dropping the runner for a loss or getting a sack.  On the minus side, if you mistime the snap, you get a penalty of half the distance to the goal, a trifling amount, but you also get to see what play the offense called.  The upside is way bigger than the possible downside.

Against Notre Dame, did Skov chew the guy's head off?

I liked his stop of Mariota on 4th and 1 at the Stanford 7 in the 2012 game to keep the game scoreless early. Set two years' worth of tone in the series right there. Even Chip Kelly was filmed saying "wow".

I think he has more than one signature moment.

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - 81alum - 12-09-2013

How does he (or any snap count timer) do it?  Is it done on visual cues, on audio cues, what?  I take it that he watches film and figures something out that tips him off...but what?  And then why doesn't everyone do it equally well?

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - Hey - 12-10-2013

To answer 81alum's question, a lot of it is under-experienced quarterbacks.  If you listen Hogan, he's predictable too.  I give Shaw and Harbaugh a lot of credit for giving the D free reign to be able to do this.  Mauro had a big stop on 3rd down in the 4th quarter of the Rose Bowl last year just by knifing through the line before anyone else had a chance to react.

On another note, look how low the offensive linemen are in that clip, Skov only had to lean over the line to make the play.

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - Slow news week - Hey - 12-21-2013

I finally sat down and watched the championship game.  Two notes.

1.)  On Skov's play the ASU line seemed really low.  He got over easily.  I'm probably projecting too much here, but on the next play I thought the offensive line seemed like they were higher up.  When the ball was snapped our D-line just submarined them and made a big dogpile in their backfield.  The pulling guard fell over who ever Henry Anderson moved out and Hoffpauir got in there unscathed.  Very nice sequence set up by Reynolds goal-line saving tackle.

2.)  The announcers.  I can add Gary Danielson to the short list of  announcers I like, along with Chris Spielman.  I haven't heard him in a while and I liked him before as well.  His partner, Verne Lundquist is old school.  If I ever have heart problems and need to remain calm during games, I'll listen to whatever game he's broadcasting.  Otherwise, underwhelming would also be a way to describe his commentary.  On Skov's play "...and Stanford saw that one coming".

Re: Shayne Skov's signature moment - fullmetal - 12-22-2013

ASU's line was low because they knew they had to get their pads low to push for some room on that QB sneak.  Pretty nice giveaway.  And yet our DL still got even lower to stop them.

Skov was asked about his uncanny ability to time the snap... here's what he said:

"You just kind of get it over a period of time. You get a feel for certain situations: How much time left on the play clock, the quarterback's physical presence and whether or not he is anticipating the snap, motions. There are different things you take into account as a whole. It's an educated guess... I can give you a nice estimation of what I assume [the snap count] will be... On third and fourth down [and goal], there was no risk, high reward. A penalty [would have been] a few inches. We don't have anything to lose at that point. I read his lips as the snap was coming... It's a hitting percentage thing."

I can't get the video to play on Instagram.  I have an account and I hear the music when I click play, but no video.  This happens on my work computer (where many sites are blocked) and my home computer where the only blocks are from Norton Internet Security.  Any suggestions?

I had issues with Instagram/Vine videos for some time with certain browsers.  They always work fine in IE, but they sometimes have issues with Firefox/Chrome.  Try IE just to watch the vid...and then go back to a more secure browser :p
