By contrast, here is a picture of celebrations on University Ave in Palo Alto after Stanford's victory over ASU the same day:

After this picture was taken a driver was cited for not yielding to the bicyclist.  David Shaw commented that such driving is not representative of the Stanford fooball program.

Trust me, the scene would have been the same if we lost. 'Tis some sort of tradition. The aroma of a Spartan Victory is the scent of burning couches, as is the aroma of Spartan Defeat. Plus it was a cold night...

Started when we lost in the Final Four in 1999. Mateen Cleaves said they were going to never let it happen again, and that they would win it all the next year to prevent it. When they did win it all, it was about 10 times worse. I am pretty sure Cedar Village has an endless stash of couches just for these occasions.

Is there a large contingent of West Virginia transplants? I thought they had trademarked couch burnin'.

This has been going on a long time after big wins (or losses) in EL. Usually it happens after we're eliminated from the NCAA tournament in basketball though. There was some stupidity but from what I've heard most of the crowd was just hanging out in the street and singing the fight song, etc. There's always a few that spoil it though.

The ELPD has historically blown this out of proportion using tear gas and whatnot when even less than this was going on. I'm surprised it didn't happen this time. They describe a "riot" as any group of students outside in the wee hours of the morning congregating anywhere.

Palo Alto riots only occur when they change they change the elementary school your kids go to.

The Palo Alto riots of '07 inflicted a grievous wound on the burg's oriental rug industry, reducing University Ave's store count from 4 to 2.

This is the reaction on the ELPD in michigan... Blame it on someone holding a "burn the couch" poster in Indy.....

Pretty lame bonfire by MSU standards.  No couches.  Not even pews from MemChu.

Q: Are there any endangered salamanders in the Quad?
A: Not any more.
