Any news on the Rose Bowl tailgate? -

Hopefully MSU fans will buy tailgate tickets and not show, so we don't run out of food for those of us who do go.

ah yes, hopefully this year's official tailgate will have learned from last year's debacle...

Gosh, what a good idea!
They just ask for your class year or if you're a parent/spouse/donor, etc.
I wonder if they spot check, or actually go through and check every person.
should have required logging into a alumni association account, maybe.

Would appreciate any opinions regarding the value of ths event.
In recent seasons I attended tailgates organzed by the Stanford Alumni Association at Wake Forest and Duke. In both cases, the value was in the interacton wth other Stanford folks. As a pure food and beverage play the value was low, and the prices were a lot less than $65 each.
Also, I plan to attend the Rose Parade so probably wouldn't get to the Rose Bowl tailgate until 11 at the earliest.

If you want to go, order now. Don't screw around.
I got the notice and ordered my tickets maybe 25 minutes ago. There's a box to a link titled, "Look who's coming" giving a list, and in the top right corner of the list is the number of tickets sold. When I ordered, the number was 1121. I refreshed it five minutes later (at the most) and the number was 1666. I clicked it again five minutes later and it was 2063. They're reducing the number of tickets this year, so this will likely sell out today.Â
I'm a veteran of the past four tailgates (a nice little brunch at the Sun Bowl, a large exclusive area on a concourse at Sun Life Stadium at the Orange Bowl, a brobdingnagian outdoor party at the Fiesta Bowl, and the even bigger event at the Rose Bowl. I had no problems last year but heard that the food ran out and later arrivals went empty-handed. Should not occur this year, with a new vendor and smaller crowd. With that 2013 exception, the tailgates are excellent.)

Many people had trouble getting from the parade to the Rose Bowl with enough time to enjoy the tailgate. Our friends who went to the official tailgate were very unhappy because the food was mostly gone by the time they arrived. We also skipped out non-official tailgate because it took us so long to get into the parking lots. This year, we are going to go see the parade floats as they are staged on the street the night before, skip the parade, and get to the Rose Bowl early to enjoy the tailgating.Â
Cheers,

BigEasyCard -
You are correct regarding the pure food and beverage play. As I mentioned, I've been to the past four pre-Bowl tailgates. Each increased in size, stature, and price. The Sun Bowl brunch was really comfy, intimate, and a great value, which paralleled the nature of the town (they really did make us welcome) and the bowl. (I think it was $20 per person.) The Orange Bowl was $50 - it was pretty much burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs and beer, but IMHO it was worth it because it helped make a statement that Stanford fans do travel and spend well. (That tailgate was sold out prior, people did ask me on the street in South Beach if I had a extra ticket). VaTech did not have any such equivalent tailgate. The ante was upped with the Fiesta Bowl - it was a very large crowd taking up a whole field, had better food, had entertainment including a live band, an open bar (including margaritas). The $65 ticket might have been considered pricey, but it continued the image that our fans were BCS bowl worthy - it was sold out well in advance, and Oklahoma State did not have any alumni tailgate.
Last year's tailgate was even pricier - $75 per head. It had a better variety of food, but you are supporting Stanford with your cash. There were problems (the vendor ran out of food, necessitating the SAA giving refunds to whomever asked). That shouldn't happen this year.
I'd have to say you should attend the SAA tailgate only if you value the interaction with Stanford folks, and watching the band perform. I went to the Rose Parade in 2000. It'll end around 10 AM. There are shuttle buses from the Parsons Corp to the Stadium, but you are correct - getting to the golf course by 11 may be iffy.Â

Embo, Pete and Garvin --
Thank you for all of the signal.
I can now knowledgeably consult with my family and decide.

I had to sneak into the Fiesta tailgate after drinking in the lot and scoping the scene, it was well done. Last year was a blast, other than the cover band seemed to want more audience participation, and missing out on food due to conversing too long. In terms of value, $65 is small change for drinks and lunch in that area, plus the added bonus of interaction. I reconnected with many old friends. My dad even managed to run into some of his friends from the class of '66 engineering group. I am heartily looking forward to this year. Our group will be class of '65, '91 and '94.
I cannot thank my benefactor enough for giving up the two tickets he could have used for his kids to let my dad and I attend with he and his wife.
