WBB: Gonzaga comes to town - 81alum - 12-13-2013

Some of you may not have noticed that finals are almost over and Gonzaga is coming to play on Saturday.  Gonzaga is back to being a really good team this year.  They are ranked 22 and just beat Ohio State and Wisconsin.  Their only loss was a very close one  to Oklahoma.

Gonzaga will be bringing Nicole Powell along, but fortunately as an Assistant Coach and not as a player!  Their other Stanford connection is Elle Tinkle, who as a sophomore is averaging about 10 minutes and is not a starter yet, but is shooting well in her limited time.

Gonzaga has a 6'4" forward (Greinacher, who is shooting 55% and is 12/12 on free throws), so they are not completely overmatched on the interior.  They mainly play a lot of guards and have a very high shooting percentage.  Keanni Albanez is shooting 44% from three point range.  Their top scorer is senior Haiden Palmer at about 16 points a game, who is a 48% shooter, 36% from three.  Jazmine Redmon is their senior point guard--also a very familiar name to us.

I would not be surprised to see Sara James get a lot of work because of her defense, and then we shall see how our other guards can match up with Gonzaga's three and four guard lineup.  If I were Gonzaga I would play a lot of pack in zone and force Stanford to make jumpers.  They are a great perimeter defense team (opponents make 22% of their treys) and probably have the quickness to get out from the zone to defend the three point shot.

Coming off of a long layoff, this could be a dangerous game for our women.
