WVB - CompSci87 - 12-13-2013

Nice match going on with Minnesota on ESPN3. Stanford takes the first two sets narrowly, 28-26 and 25-23. Second one was tied as late as 23-23.

Re: WVB - M T - 12-13-2013

I'm watching it at work over the net.  I surely miss my TiVo to look back at some of those calls!

Re: WVB - CompSci87 - 12-13-2013

It's a pain one can't pause/rewind espn3 live streams. I guess a replay will be available there after the game is over, though.

Lexington Regional Final: Stanford vs Penn State 1PM Saturday - M T - 12-13-2013

#10 Minnesota was nearly equal to #3 Stanford, but Stanford eaked out a 3-0 win (28-26, 25-23, 25-22)
#2 Penn State (3-1 over #20 Mich State) awaits in the regional final

I'd have to say that in such a close match-up today that it was experience that won the tight games.
That and blocks....

Re: WVB - Farm93 - 12-13-2013

Decided to take a look to see how Minnesota fared against Penn State.

I think they played twice.  Minnesota lost the first time at Penn State in 5.  It appears as close as 5 sets would imply.  The second time they were swept in 3 (20, 17, 23).  So Minnesota was probably not quite Penn State's equal, but they were in the contests.

The regional final should be interesting.

Re: WVB - Canalejas - 12-14-2013

Anybody tear themselves away from Army-Navy to watch Stanford Volleyball take set 1 from Penn State?

Re: WVB - CompSci87 - 12-14-2013

I'd be watching but am at the WBB game!

Re: WVB - fullmetal - 12-14-2013

Third set is tied up at 23 all, and each team has won one set!

Re: WVB - Canalejas - 12-14-2013

Still tied at 26 all.

Edit:  Dang.  Penn State takes the 3rd 28-26.

Re: WVB - Canalejas - 12-14-2013

Stanford wins set 4, 25-18 to force a 5th set.

Re: WVB - fullmetal - 12-14-2013

3-4 in the 5th set, Stanford serving.

Re: WVB - fullmetal - 12-14-2013

Tied at 4, go listen on KZSU!

Re: WVB - Canalejas - 12-14-2013

This Cardinal team has definitely made volleyball one of my two favorite Stanford sports.

Stanford up 9-6 in the 5th.

Re: WVB - CrazedZooChimp - 12-14-2013

Card need to get momentum back.

Re: WVB - Canalejas - 12-14-2013

Tough way to go out, letting Penn State go on a 6-0 run in the 5th.

Re: WVB - Card Fan in OR - 12-14-2013

Its my fault. PSU started that run as soon as I saw here the match was televised and I turned it on.

Damn, I hate it when my team loses. Condolences to the team. It's got to be harder on them than me.

Re: WVB - fullmetal - 12-14-2013

Going from up 9-8 to losing 11-15...heartbreaking :(

Re: WVB - fullmetal - 12-14-2013

KZSU is playing Dave Alvin - Gary, Indiana 1959.  The blues is an apt genre to play right now.  (Also thanks to Spiny Norman for turning me on to Dave Alvin way back when.)

Re: WVB - 76lsjumb - 12-15-2013

This is a team that is good -- indeed, very, very good -- at virtually every position, but lacks a terminator -- the person who can be set in any rotation, when everyone in the place knows it's going to her, and still get the point to stop the other side's run or win the close set.  We've had a run of them over the years, of course -- Folkl, Walsh, Oganna N, Logan Tom, and a host of others -- but no one really filled that role this year [or last].  When things got tight, we kept hitting roll shots, which kept the play going, but couldn't win the points when we had to.  Unfortunately, that leaves you with hoping the other side makes a hitting error or relying on monster blocks to win, and, at 30+ - 2, and with another Final Four on the line, Penn State's not the opponent you want to have in those circumstances.

I'm reduced to rooting for UW -- who came back from 2 down against U.SC AT U.SC to win in a very tight game 5.  At least we beat UW once this season, and we need them [or someone] to beat Penn State and keep them from tying our 6 Nat'l titles.

Oh, and hope we've recruited [or can develop] that terminator...

Re: WVB - Viking_Guy - 12-15-2013

One issue is that Stanford still runs the 5-1 offense.  The runs often happened when we had Madi Bugg in the front row with Wopat and Williams.  Williams is a good hitter, but not the kind who will hit over the top of a block.  And Wopat is a very good middle blocker.  But with only those two options the Penn State block was able to key on only three real axes of threat: Williams outside and Wopat on the quick or the slide.  Also, Bugg just isn't as good a blocker as the hitters.  In the decisive 5th set run, Williams got blocked twice, and Penn State was able to hit over Bugg several times.

Will be interesting to see if we try to go to a 6-2 next year.

The other issue I've had all year long is that there's been no real consistent playing time given to young hitters to step up now that Williams and Wopat have finished their careers.  Even when Stanford was dominating teams, at most maybe Lydia Bai or Morgan Boukather would come in for a couple of points here or there.  But there will be a lot of teams trying to replace the majority of their offense next year.

But I'm glad SC doesn't have another chance to close the championship gap this fall.  And will be cheering for UW as well.

The final results do show how lopsided the bracket was - Missouri and Florida, playing in a mediocre SEC,  put up gaudy records, got the 4th and 5th overall seeds, and promptly lost at home in the second round.  According to at least one advanced ranking system, the right side of the bracket was the top four teams in the country, all playing in the regional finals against one another.  Though Texas is really good.

VG

P.S. 76, my nominee for terminator has always been Howard.  I don't know exactly what the issue is, but when she really lets loose, she hammers the ball.  Burgess really needs to learn how to tool a block, but also has the raw power.
